I found a file that was great, it was a character rig, but the cool part was the way the person set it up.

He used nulls and ">>>>>" naming convention to identify zones in the "current Item list".
Meaning, it was very easy to find the ">>>>>Placement Handles>>>>> Because all the goals had ">>>" in front of them, forcing them into his a sort of zone. He also used the color box for the goals.

My idea is to go one step further and in the current control lister selector, when you color code something, the whole list turns that color. This would allow you to make all the goals yellow, for instance. Illustrated in the attached jpeg.

You might be able to add in a window that controls the colors,
maybe controls what you can add. This would help finding stuff in the current item, and also in the scene editor.

If they don't move to a hierchy based solution, I hope the implement something like the above.
