View Full Version : Animating a ripple?

I've seen tutorials on animating surfaces to simulate the lightplay on and through water waves, but I haven't yet seen how to animate a wave through a surface.

I'm hoping to animate a simple wave, like you get from throwing a stone into a still pond, so, not the surf, not wave upon wave upon wave, but just to make a ripple move through a surface.

any links to share?

thank you!

Just use the ripple procedural set to 1, it will give you 1 ring with as many waves as you want spreading out from a centerspot that you set in the position panel.

OK...is there a method of doing that with geometry, tho? IOW, to express the ripple thru a surface by displacing actual geometry as a ripple goes through it?

thanks!

yep, use the displacement panel and do same stuff.
If you do the ripple in the color panel then copy the layer and paste it into the displacement panel for the bump, the bump will match the color change.
This will be actual geometry manipulation so you may have to up your polys in object to make it deform correctly.
