Does it matter if you run your video drives internally versus externally? I have always mounted my 4 scsi drives internally. Storing the drives in an external case with its own power suppy and fan seems more logical, and efficient but I guess I have never seen a VT system set up this way.

I guess one logical question is the external scsi connector on the Adaptec card identical or as fast as the internal one? Im about to build another VT system, and I would like to go this route if its logical and will work

So what do you think VT experts give me the scoop the good the bad and the ugly

Not at all. The computer doesn't know the difference.

It depends on the card, but normally the external is the faster one. On some single channel cards, there is one faster channel and one slower channel.

If it is a dual channel card, then the external is identical to the internal.

Just don't mix internal and external unless you are a real SCSI guru. There are lots of termination and channel gotcha's you have to watch out for.

I have an adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 installed. I have to find out if the external connector is as fast or faster than the internal one. Its interesting I have never seen a VT configured using external drives. It seems to make sense especially for power consumption and heating issues. I think I will go that route for my next sytem I build.

I used to use an Adaptec 19160 interface where only the internal connector was 160 while the external was 80. I believe the major difference between the 19160 and the 29160 is the external on the 29160 is 160.

I think you're right. The external will be the U160 and one of the internal connectors will be U160 and one UW (80).

I'd still check the Adaptec website though.

An Adaptek 39320 works out great here for an external case with 8 Scsi in it. cool too.

Hey Don can you give me some specs on your case? Price, power supply, brand etc.
