Hi All

I noticed that there aint many benchmarks on the same hardware to compare the speed of Lightwave 32 VS 64. I have multiple hard drives and boot into either Win XP sp2 or X64 to do work. I don't have drivers for all my hardware in X64.

PC Specs

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2500Mhz)
2 GIG Corsair DDR 400 cl 2 (Dual channel)
nVidia Geforce 6800 256MB PCIE slot one
nVidia Geforce 6600 256MB PCIE slot two (Non SLI for running 4 monitors)

I noticed that I get some bright dots artifacts in X64 and some of the standard plug-ins behave strange. Otherwise it is faster around 20% on this specific scene. Stats included. PLD antialising also makes for strange effects on carpet.

Thanks for these, I was wondering if LW64 gave any sort of general speed improvement. Now I know :D

What are those white pixels showing up in the 64-bit renders?

I just don't know, and there's absolutely no way any of us can ever find out.

Except for, like, reading his post.

Well, I'd say "that's what I get for skipping to the interesting part", except I still don't really know what they are, or rather, why they're there.

I installed the latest drivers from nVidia for X64 81.98 and it seems to have fixed the problem. Drivers are dated 7 Feb 2006.

The strange pattern on the carpets is called moire and is due to a lack of sufficient anti aliasing. Nothing out of the oridinary.

Thanks for the test! very useful.

Have you overclocked the X2 3800+
You mention it's 2500Mhz i believe standard they're 2010Mhz....?

I believe the rendertimes differences are from load balancing the LW renderer
LW64 has been optimized differently to LW32....

Hence the reason for the signifigant difference in rendertimes.....
It's not that the 64bit version is really much faster, just optimized differently
than the 32bit version....

For example if you rendered both scenes in say LW8.0, and LW8.01, and 8.3 and 8.5, all of them will show some scenes faster and some slower...
It depends on how NT load balance the renderer.

Yes I have overclocked the X2. And it runs with no problems. Using Aqua Mini watercooling system.

I would like to see some rendering times on scenes that render a bit longer than 36 sec. I think the difference will be bigger...

Can you please render/test "radiosity box" scene from LW content ? It's more heavy on CPU so we could see is there any improvments in radiosity speed between 32bit and 64bit version.

Thanks
