Hi all,

A friend has a LW 6 object that needs to be converted to LW 4. He still has LW 4.

I have LW 7.5. Does LW 7.5 allow me to convert objects back to version 4.0? It appears not.

Can LW4 open OBJ, DXF or 3DS files..? If so...maybe you could export the file from LW7.5 in one of those three formats, then open up the results in LW4.

If LW4 can open up LW5 files, then maybe you can use the "Export LightWave 5" option, too.

Hi,

Exporting to an intermediate format might work, I'll have to ask my friend. But i don't see how LW4 can open a LW 5 file. It would be like predicting the future.

It's more that the LWO format didn't change that much until 6, and the format itself is IFF based, which means it is made up of chunks. The LWO loader can ignore any chunks it doesn't recognise, so hopefully should be able to pick up most of the data from any LWO from 1-5.... In theory :)

The .lwo file format changed at v.6, Newtek was kind enough to put an export to 5 and older function in v.6 and on up. Version 6 was the only time the format changed, so .lwo 1 thru 5.6 are compatible.

Also keep in mind that some things may not make the transfer, so import it and check it over before giving it to your friend.

Such as layers, more than 64k polys in an object, subpatches and more besides. If you want to give him a multi-part object that you would now use layers for, you will have to give him an object per layer.
