Since all modelling work in Doom3 is done by Lightwave, see what you can achieve with it as seen over there:

enjoy :)

Harhar, all of UT 2003 was done with Maya, it even comes with the PLE to make levels etc on.

I want to know if there will be any 'special' support for a 3D app for HalfLife2.

Actually, UT2003 was done in LightWave - the Unreal Editor even imports .LWO objects natively - for Maya you have to use a plugin to get your objects across and PLE was only included 'cause Alias/Wavefront paid big bucks to get it on there...

Ohh cool I might do some stuff for UT then. I wonder if Alias|Wavefront got there returns?

have you watched the E3 revealing video of Doom3, I remember pretty clearly Jhon Carmack himself said that Maya was used to model characters.

Yeah, but Carmack is just a coder - do you really think he knows anything about graphics? :D Alias/Wavefront probably bought him a free lunch that day :D :D :D

Seriously though, the original thread for this discussion (complete with screenshot) is here (http://forums.newtek.com/discus/messages/2/24203.html?).

Rei: There's an UT2003 LightWave tut' here (http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/modeling/UT2003/index.html).

I've just downloaded the Doom III legacy trailer and at exactly 2mins 56seconds into the trailer, Kevin Cloud (ID artist) talks about how they create art for Doom III and it shows a monitor character being modelled in LightWave, concslusive proof I think!

Download the legacy trailer here:

Check the awesome E3 2003 trailer here:

I'm hoping (hopping? no) that Doom 3 and HalfLife 2 will include level editors that will support Lightwave in the way that Unreal Tournament 2003 UED3 does.

I'm using Lightwave almost exclusively for UT2K3 UED3 now.

The Doom3 engine supports models in native .lwo format :)

are you sure the bit where it shows the creature 'jump' cycle isn't 3DSMax?

Well aside from the fact that Fred has already said that he's using Maya to animate, unless he spent a lot of time tweaking the 3ds Max interface to resemble Maya, he's using Maya in that jump sequence.

If you watch the video you will clearly see Lightwave being used and animation in Maya.

He didn't say it in the video, he said it on a messageboard a while back. That's why, even before this video, everyone knew they were using Maya to animate. I think it was fairly well known that Lightwave was going to be used for modeling since that's what Kenneth Scott used for Daikatana and Quake 3, the video (and a few interviews and plan updates) confirmed that. I'm just hoping that there will be a way to get LW animation into Doom3 from the first day of the release.

Yeah there was big hype when they hired him. He was hired because of the film background. They wanted to add film cinematics and have a film-y look throughout the game. I believe all of that was discussed in one of the first press releases for Doom3. Maya was mentioned around that time too.
