View Full Version : How can I make a River running in LW???

Hi all

I already tried to make morph (like shockwave method).
I'm using procedurals textures and gradients (incidence).
I wanna insert more river rapids to take a better motion look.

How can I do that?
have anything (plugin or method) that drive my procedural texture to make a curve?

Thanks all

Thanks Bryphi

This is what I want.

And this is actual image, but is not running (without tweak)

And this is result morph render

out of curiosity, do you have World coordinates checked in the texture editor?

No one texture with world coordinates ON :(

I guess that maybe a some bug with gradients and thickness Gradient. I don't know.

I already did make something like it before. (shockwaves)

Thanks

because your image needs to rap all the way around it will be more work but it is still possible. You would need to render it out an image sequence. Then touch up the seem in a compositing program.

Yes Bryphi I did it. But Here don't work. :(

Try the Wedge tool in Modeller, then delete everything but one face.

Aaaah...m8 i can't find a "Wedge" tool =P :( , i only find a "Edge" tool and that kinda solves my problem

Ity looks like this is what you need;

Pic1 make a flat plane segmented,

Pic2 make the UV and stretch the result down so proportion of width to lenght is same as original object

Pic3 using bend tool, bend as marked

Pic 4 you'll end up with this
Save

Pic5 in layout with camera positioned to oversee
Pic6 textured with AVI of fractal noise rendered on a flat plane that I usually have around to test surfaces.

As you can see that the textures go around with river.

will look this way

and after playing with the magnet tool and deforming river a bit it looks this way:
with water following stream thru all sorts of twists.
if initial plane is bent down you will create a waterfall, and if a long enough plane is made you could create a complete river with waterfall and continuing on down stream.
for future info

to get rid of the seam, apply teh procedural to an empty image in the image editor with "textured filter" and apply this image to the surface. Set the image tile options to mirror and scale it to half the length of the actual surface size.
( just do autosize, and type *0.5 behind teh value and enter )

You can also use UV's and then animate the texture with the animate UV's feature ( doesn't work with Fprime ). But then you might have to tweak the UV's a bit to get rid of the seam.

yea..what toonafish said about seam :agree:

a little test with a UV texture, works better then I expected. I just scaled the UV's length 200%. The good thing is you can use Subd's, just set the UV interpolation to Linear Corners.

Try this for one way to make a ring.

OHH I like Toonafish,
didn't think about that testing texture
gonna make me an avi for later use.
Thanks for the tip :D

What works a bit quicker for a flat disc, is to create a disc with no thickness, hit "b" for bevel, click once in the screen but don't drag, deactivate bevel, scale the new polygon as much as needed and delete it.

oh, and for the UV's you could use UVspider on the disc, and if you need a morph after all you can create a morph from the UV's with "FI's_UV2Poly" or "UV to MorphMap".

But to create a not so uniform shape as a river I'd use a spline and CurveWorm ( check Flay if you don't have it ) with 3 sides and delete 2 afterwards. The great thing about CurveWorm is that it makes some very neat UV's that will give you no distortion

Hi All.

Finally works fine here. :)

As Toonafish said the problem was distribution of points. I did make another object based in a simple geometry and texture works fine. :)

Thanks so much for you guys :)

Hey look here (www.lumentechnology.com.br/valter/river.gif) my result
