Bob, what is the status of the Color Wheel ?

12-30-2005, 07:04 PM
As of today its finally starting to feel solid.
But its not fully tested.

I am working on the feature upgrades to it but was wondering if anyone
wanted to try using it as is for now and get the updates as I go.

Should take about a month to complete it.

I am adding in ColorReplace features along with
the regular color whacking abilites.
Whats going in?
A simple four corner garabage matte that you can keyframe
combined with color isolation features of ColorReplace. This gives you
the ability add further restrictions to your matte.
So you can pull off stuff like this.

12-30-2005, 07:14 PM
Here is where the 3 wheeler is at. I just did this in like 10 seconds.

12-30-2005, 07:43 PM
Here is another couple of examples.
3 Wheels are more fun than one. :)
This is a cool example if you leave the highlights alone and
increase the contrast you get some cool blue looks.

Bob, check your PM's......

01-01-2006, 02:47 AM
Take a look bringing an image back from the Dark Red
I am experimenting with my new 3Wheel Color Corrector.
It seems that there are times I need to combine it with other plugins
to get a cleaner image.
I got permission to use this image from Chip a VT user to show
you an example of what a 3Wheel color correction is good for.

So what you see is BobsOneTouch combined with
Bobs 3Wheeler coming to pull this image out from the Dark Red Sea.

Bobs 3 Wheeler will be out sometime in January.
Any feedback would be great.
Anyway I was pretty excited about the results hope you
are as well.

Happy New Year

In case anyone wants to see the grass greener clip
You can see an example I uploaded this AM.

01-02-2006, 11:04 AM
Hey Bob, has anyone ever told you that you are a genius? And a talented one at that!

Jim Capillo
01-02-2006, 11:18 AM
Hey Bob, the grass looks GREAT !

But the horses sound like sick cows....... ;) :jester:

01-02-2006, 11:29 AM
Thanks Guys but I have been dieing to get some time to
get some demo images out so you can get the idea of what is already!

Here is a couple of more images. I just shot this abot 10 minutes ago with my
still camera

01-02-2006, 02:46 PM
Seriously, is Color Replace coming as part of the 3 Wheel ?

01-02-2006, 04:32 PM
ColorReplace tech will be in the 3 wheeler but
ColorReplace has been out for quite some time.
(I am using the old one to do these examples)
So its not a tease just a hey you can do some cool stuff already.

In the 3 Wheel version there will be an improved mask as well
more controls.

01-02-2006, 07:24 PM

Looks grat cant wait till its released, now that I finally have T4,
the 3wheeler is on the top of my must get plugins.

how about so new packages for 2006 ?
(maybe 3wheeler, lwconnect timecode)

keep up the great work you are the best!!!!!

01-17-2006, 05:51 PM
Holly Sh****t !!!

This Is Amazing Man !!!!

could i use it -in real time- with the switcher ?

01-17-2006, 06:12 PM
Nope; VTEdit only.

(I'm not Bob but I'm not sure he's gotten home, yet.)

01-17-2006, 08:36 PM
Yeah I make post stuff. It is pretty darn cool..
I am hoping to make that End of Jan release for these plugins.

01-17-2006, 08:44 PM
Hey Bob,

Just a couple of comments.
Nice stuff !!! first of all...

But why did you remove the reset per wheel?

Also, just a pet peeve of mine but please make the numeric fields right justified..not left...

It's a visual workflow thing ;)

Looking good thou...

01-17-2006, 08:49 PM
The left and the right I will do what I can.
Reset per wheel was too complex for Keyframing.
Long Long story.

01-17-2006, 08:52 PM
This may sound like a strange thought...but could you use your color isolations tools to feed or control a chromakey?
Like in your example of the horses... to then be able to use JUST the grass to key something ontop of...Think in terms of Sports that put markers on the field while in the game etc...

What are your thoughts ?

01-17-2006, 08:57 PM
I hope he can get HALF of his creativity in there!
Umm, er... umm, It's Bob's thunder so I shan't steal if from him but he does have a few innovative features in mind that would relate, somewhat, to your thought, Ray. Time is the nemesis, as always.

01-17-2006, 08:57 PM
Is there any chance for an UNDO, REDO...and a quick toggle on/off of the CC ?

Can I save off looks and create presets ?

What about automated white balance controls?

01-17-2006, 09:45 PM
Automated white balance is already there. Just pick the swatch for each wheel and point it to the appropriate "grey" that should be the "white" of that luma range.

01-18-2006, 06:58 AM
It sure looks like it has potential, but once again the (huge) downside is that these plug-ins (apparently) need to be updated when VT is updated. To make matters worse, there is no way of knowing if or when this is done.

01-18-2006, 10:31 AM
Is there any chance for an UNDO, REDO...and a quick toggle on/off of the CC ?

Hmm I will look into this.
Should be easy enough.

Can I save off looks and create presets ?
Yes thats in there. Save and load.

What about automated white balance controls?
In there for each of the 3 levels.

Update per version.
I keep up. People that email me get new versions almost in sync with
Newtek releases.
Sometimes my email gets backed up but I am around.
Like with 4.6 I had new plugs ready when it shipped.
Sometimes I am not sure if users are interested in updates.
Many dont update VT. :foreheads

01-18-2006, 02:39 PM
Of course, with the issues with the public VT updates, I'm sure you can see why...

So Bob, are you telling us we can save a preset as a "work-around" for the removal of the reset button? The rest button seems important to me. Or can we double click on the number entry fields and have them reset like in Control Tree???

01-18-2006, 06:42 PM
First there is a reset button.
It resets all there wheels and removes the keyframes.

What I dont have is a reset for each wheel.
It seemed wrong when I added in the keyframes.
When you reset you reset to what?
That was my question. Reset to the default but how about the
keyframes inbetween etc. After using it for a while doing some of my
own testing the per wheel reset seemed useless especially with the
roll over buttons. Those work so fast.

01-18-2006, 08:16 PM
But if we have a undo ability then that might help ;)

Thanks for listening Bob..

What did you think about my keyer thoughts ?

I also really wish we had the ability to mask and isolate with roto splines etc...but that is for another day ....hehehe.

01-18-2006, 08:17 PM

01-18-2006, 08:28 PM
>But if we have a undo ability then that might help
Hmm.. Think think.

>Thanks for listening Bob..
No sweat thanks for all the ideas

>What did you think about my keyer thoughts ?
I am still tyring to picture what you meant. I am pretty beat tonight though.

>I also really wish we had the ability to mask
>and isolate with roto splines etc...but that is
>for another day ....hehehe.
Were you looking over my shoulder? Cause what you see is not the
final version. :jam:
I still have 12 days left.

01-18-2006, 10:38 PM
Cool, so there is a master reset, good.

I don't think that you need a per wheel reset button per se, I think that would waste real estate. BUT, I do think it would be totally useful to have the double-click on any numeric requestor control set it back to the default, consistent with how everything currently works in the control tree.

You ask what the default would be, well, for any control it would be the wheels centered or the sliders in their default positions. This is totally useful. Whenever I do a color correction, I must first set an initial frame where there is no change from normal, then do my change or changes, and then get back to the normal once I'm past the correction. Again, I'm assuming a dynamic color situation in one clip. The way I do this, unless I've set start and end keyframes in advance, is by double-clicking to get back to the default. Again, the fact that there are keyframed changes make the reset to default for a particular keyframe very powerful.

Like I said, this is something I normally use all the time in the control tree.

01-22-2006, 08:45 PM
Ok here is one day 122 or there abouts since I started...
Is a simple mask. Make points add points
Edge softness yet to come.
And a secondary mask or by using a color selection is also available
Hope you like it. I have some days left..

01-23-2006, 08:10 AM
COOL BOB, real cool, ya could definitly do some interesting
stuff with that!!!

01-26-2006, 11:29 AM
Looks like you got the beginnings of "Bob's Garbage Matte" here!!

01-26-2006, 09:39 PM
This is getting much closer. I will need some more tweaks but its
very close now.. Who knows I might make the end of January.

01-26-2006, 09:43 PM
Hey RAY (Ray Adams) Its da numbers Ray :)
I moved em for you.
I am close to completion.
You can see I added a softness to the mask.
I have a Color Selection as another mask or as an additional mask type.
It works like this.

IF the Mask is used alone no problem.
If the Color Selection is used along. No problem.
If the mask is used then the color selection is restricted to the
Inside of the mask. No problem.
Hope that helps ya folks.
Its getting to look pretty good now.

01-26-2006, 11:42 PM
You are way to cool!!! Can't wait till it's finished!!

01-27-2006, 05:10 AM
A Matte tool and other tools would be possible if I could inject
Alpha channel with an effect. Sadly I can not.

Jim Capillo
01-27-2006, 05:30 AM
VERY cool, Bob, can't wait to get my hands on it !

01-27-2006, 07:34 AM
A Matte tool and other tools would be possible if I could inject
Alpha channel with an effect. Sadly I can not.

How about this: could you invert your mask so eveything outside of it is affected? Then maybe we could make all that video black or 'colorize' it (like Photoshop's Hue/Saturation effect) to be all blue or green, then key out the unwanted area using the existing key tools? I realize this may require rendering out the clip with your filter first, but it's something.

01-27-2006, 07:37 AM
I think thats possible..
Drop the luma in all the channels with an inverted mask.
The Luma key..
I will have to take a peek today.

01-27-2006, 09:26 AM
Check this out..
I was playing around with 3Wheeler this AM when I
decided to try this and Shazam.. Pretty cool what you can do
with this thing.

Brian Peterson
01-27-2006, 09:30 PM
Maybe I've missed it in all the posts, but have you set a price yet Bob? I need to start saving some pennys.

01-28-2006, 04:44 AM
Are Color mask & Shape mask points keyframeables ?

01-28-2006, 07:18 AM
The Color is. The Mask points I am not sure of at this time.

I am considering a couple of differrent approaches at this time
so I can keep it in realtime

01-28-2006, 01:09 PM

Thanks for right justifying the numbers :)

Your addons and everything are looking GREAT !!!!

thou your day for night...needs some more tweeking with less blue...and more greys ranges and less color saturation...yet with highlights still.

This is coming along VERY nicely..

Hey Bob, would you like me to design a consistent UI for all of your plugins?

01-28-2006, 01:13 PM
I forgot to add that if you are able to get the shape mask to be keyframable...It would also be nice to have it ALSO have a softness outline to be able to adjust the edges of the mask to be both hard or softer depending on the material...Think of it as a REALTIME ROTO mask setup...this would be SO cool to have !!!

01-28-2006, 01:19 PM
Thanks Ray,
I was not trying for a real Day for night. I was going for the Hollywood version
I have seen in many shows. You know flood the area with blue light and
bring down the darkness. I have seen this look in several movies.
That said.. :)
Thanks for all the input.

Also WORK ON ALL my interfaces.
WOW up until now I really didnt have any because of
my own limitations in time and the way I was forced to bring up
boxes in VT.
This is kind of a new area/era for me
and HEY if you started making cool interfaces what would the
neighbors think :)
Truthfully this plugin is in overtime already
I have to start work on my NAB product before April :compbeati

01-28-2006, 01:28 PM
>It would also be nice to have it ALSO have a softness outline ??
It has edge softness as you can see below.
Keyframeing the points have been on my mind but time and the tweaks to do it have been as well.

01-28-2006, 01:30 PM
Hi Bob,

Just thought of unifying your UI and looks for all so there is consitency with looks and operations. Not saying you need to...just offering to help if you ever wanted to :)

Also...with you shape mask tool...it would be very helpful to also be able to turn off/on the HUD yet when needed to see the result...and It would also be cool to be able to control nodes even when the hud was off to see the comp.

01-28-2006, 01:33 PM
Does the shape tool support splines or just line segments ?

If you do support splines which one?

I would suggest that you support B-Splines...they are the best for roto work and take the least time for the user to setup...

Looking GREAT Bob !!!

01-28-2006, 01:39 PM
Just some asthetics to the new UI elements...
align the softness numbers box with the one below it...also the color swatch and the numbers boxes should have some sort of outline or etching like the boxes above for the R G B and chroma.

Also the text used should be like the text used above...Chroma..etc...
You really like that glow text look, Bob...but it isn't the best for UI's and workflow, IMHO...

01-28-2006, 09:29 PM
>Does the shape tool support splines or just line segments ?
Currently it doesnt support splines.
>If you do support splines which one?
If I were to support splines it would
be Cardinal Splines becuase there are easier to control than BSplines.

>I would suggest that you support B-Splines...
>they are the best for roto work and take the least
>time for the user to setup...
I agree if I thought you needed to roto a lot with a color tool.
Thats debatable. That said I am working on ideas for
keyframeable motion for the points in the matte first.
Thats the big thing rolling around in my head.

To be honest I never expected to take it this far (multi point mask tool)
But now that I have I am glad I did.

I love the glow buttons. I know they are a bit, well, un normal
but hey they make it fun for me. :)

And Ray.
Thanks for the ideas and advice.

I was looking around at different correctors and its not like most of the
others. Its like a combo thing far as I can tell.
The little color section mask has come in very handy for some
interesting effects.

01-28-2006, 09:31 PM
Opps I meant to place these in here like this.

01-28-2006, 09:49 PM
Hey Bob,

That 3 wheeler is coming along great. I see you have luma adjustments for lows, mids and highlights, is this a pedestal adjustment, a gain adjustment or a gamma adjustment? Maybe you could add control for all 3 parameters on all 3 ranges independantly. Oh, and before I forget, an independat hue and saturation control for Lows, Mids and Highlights would also be great.

Congratulations on the progress so far, we're all anxiously awaiting for this plug in. I for one am ready to purchase 2 seats as soon as you have it available for sale.

01-28-2006, 09:56 PM

I see you have luma adjustments for lows, mids and highlights,
is this
a pedestal adjustment
? Not sure I understand and am willing to listen/learn if you
can explain it to me.

>a gain adjustment
Yes its primarily a gain adjustment for each level.
I pictured it being used mostly at the 2 far ends of the spectrum.

>or a gamma adjustment?
No not Gama that would be tuff

> Oh, and before I forget, another little tip,
> a hue and saturation control for Lows, Mids and Highlights
> would be great.
Hmm what would it be used for?
Can you show me or give me an example where you would
want to use that?

01-28-2006, 11:40 PM
>Oh, and before I forget, an independat hue
>and saturation control for Lows, Mids and Highlights would also be great.

Saturation I think I can do.
Hue.. Now that I have to think about.
Do you think you would need a Hue outside
of the one thats on the control tree?

01-28-2006, 11:42 PM
Before I forget.
if you reduce the luma of the lows arent
you changing the pedestal?

01-29-2006, 12:32 AM
Hey Bob,

What I mean by pedestal, gain and gamma is this...

Pedestal moves the range of luminance values like a simple addition operator does. The distance between values remains, but their position on the waveform is shifted equally.

Gain Is like a multiplication in which the lower end of the range remains at it's current level and the higher we are on the value, the more shift is induced by the operator.

Gamma is a complex one, as it keeps the lower and upper end of the renge intact and shifts the values in the middle in a fashion similar to a curve.

These are my observations from using those three operators on other color correction solutions.

Now, how you handle the overlap between ranges when shifting pedestal, gamma or gain for shadows, mids and highlights is another issue I really have no answer for :)

As far as hue is concerned, you're probably right, it doesn't sound very likely that an image would have different hue shifts based on luminance values, but you never know. If it's easy to implement, go for it, otherwise it's not that important.

Saturation on the other hand is helpful, because sometimes you want a very saturated image, but very saturated highlights and shadows look ugly, so I like having control over each range.

I also don't like how most 3 wheel color correction implementations enable you to tint shadows with a certain color, but leave you with blacks that are not really black but a very dark shadow of the color you used to tint the low range with. I think tints in the shadows should work as a multiplier so as to preserve the very darkest regions black instead of a dark color. Same goes for highlights. White should remain white, regardless of tinting, unless one whishes otherwise. :)

Oh, I almost forgot, I would also like to be able to set luminance limits for chroma saturation and also a knee for luminance would be helpful.

Hope it all helps! In any case, what you have posted so far looks fantastic. Keep it up. :)

01-29-2006, 12:40 AM
By the way... This is why I like color curves so much. By altering curves for red green and blue independantly you can do everything. It just tends to be more abstract so a lot of people steer clear of color curves.

01-29-2006, 08:05 AM
Thanks for all the feedback. I will have to look into some and
put some off so I can roll this one out. Saturation is on my

01-29-2006, 08:17 AM
Also the text used should be like the text used above...Chroma..etc...
You really like that glow text look, Bob...but it isn't the best for UI's and workflow, IMHO...

Ray I am running out of time. The crunch is on. I dont think I can
alter the background and make the mods I need in the interface
to make this happen.

The Mask check boxes can be changed quickly but the
outline for many things are in the background and might have to
go so I can quickly add saturation for Cholo which I think is am important feature.
I think HUE is kind of important too but progam wise I
am not sure how the #^%& I would do that.
Its an angular calculation on a square plane that is not homogenous
to HSV. Anyway (skiping the math) I REALLY love all the sugesstions
and will so as much as I can to put them all in.

01-30-2006, 12:57 PM
Cholo and all you other folks.
I got desaturation working but can not get saturation to increase.
From a math point of view I just am not sure how..
So that said I will have a D next to the RGB for each level
for desaturation.
Sorry but I want to put a cap on this so I can move on to my
NAB beta project and the plugin is so useful now I dont want you folks
to be upset by me not delivering.

01-30-2006, 04:05 PM
Awesome! When can we purchase it?

01-30-2006, 07:07 PM
Looking like a next week release..
(fingers crossed)

02-02-2006, 06:49 PM
HSL Qualification ?

Super Kilovectors
Hue, Saturation and Luminance qualification with softness controls for upper and lower threshold clip adjustments

i havent this pic... let me find some similar...

02-02-2006, 07:06 PM

I am afraid the feature request line is about done.
I have just got the motion polygon mask compiled now
off to test.

You have saturation and hue in VT control tree.
I will prodvide desaturation.
That should do it for you.

02-02-2006, 07:10 PM
Let me add to this bit.
The trigger tween the low to mid and mid to high is is adjustable
via a luma value.

The softness of the knee (thats what I call it) is predetermined.
I did this so you can get realtime output.

Scott Bates
02-02-2006, 10:18 PM
Qualified by the fact that I really have no idea what you're talking about Bob ... ... it sounds fantastic to me!

02-06-2006, 05:33 AM
You may have wondered what is up.
So I thought I would fill you in.
1) Good news is the polygon masks now seem complete.
They move and change shape. You must keep the same point
count though.

Bad news is my ability to move to the next and
previous keyframe is NOT working. It was shaky before
but now its totally disfunctional. I have wirtten Andrew an
SOS and hope to get an answer soon.

02-07-2006, 10:08 PM
Hey ALL,
FIRST A BIG Thank You to Andrew Cross of Newtek
who helped me pull this off.
I was stuck in getting to the next or previous keyframe.
Without him I would have never got it to work. So Thanks

So what do you want to know?
What do you need to know?
All I need is to have the testers verify that is OK.
Bobs3Wheeler is ready to roll.

FEATURES: YES there are a few that make it unique.
Number one is you can save your settings and load them
up. Cold Blue, Warm Yellow, you make your own setting
save it off and call it you when you need it.

2) It not only adjusts color within a luma range.
Low Medium or High This is SO important I cant tell you
how cool this has been to work with.

3) Desaturate the image withing the Low Medium or High area.
This comes in VERY handy when you want a more film like look.

4) A color selection mask

5) A mulitpoint polygon mask
with or without soft edges.

The Color adjustments have 2 masking types
that can be used together or apart.

Why? because you might want to tweak a particular color like only the
OR you might want to adjust only the window or door that was open.

6) Color white balance within each range. Yes you pick the white
or grey or dark grey and it will white balance to that color.

One more NOTE:

The Polygon mask as well as the color adjustments are

Yes, you can adjust the size, shape and position of the polygon
mask as long as you keep the point count the same.

Wild 3Wheel color correction in realtime by Bob
Released on Sunday unless the testers beat me up.

The month in review

02-07-2006, 10:12 PM
Eon5 Do you have that image of the girl?
It would be fun for me to try and do what they did.

02-08-2006, 05:04 PM

How do I get it? Where? How much?
My credit card is burning a hole in my pocket!

Any demo version at least?

02-09-2006, 04:49 AM
I have never been good at demos.
So far it looks like Monday you can order
from Video Hardware Services, Varto Technologies or
Safe Harbor.
I am looing at a selling price of tween 149 and 99.
If I go for 149 this plugin will come with a free V2 of Color Replace.
I am going to throw all that was done here with masking etc into
Color Replace to make it a better product.

02-10-2006, 05:26 AM
One last image showing the last feature I just added.
Hope you guys buy a ton of them its a very cool product.

02-10-2006, 12:52 PM
Im buying

02-10-2006, 09:46 PM
Cant help but play with this.
This is the polygon mask being used to make
something different.
The points of the mask are

Just a nother whacky clip idea using

Maybe this will give every one ideas maybe not..

02-14-2006, 05:10 AM
I tweaked this this AM.
 WOW it came out pretty close for a 10 minute

02-15-2006, 11:53 AM
New image this AM just for those of you that have not purchased
I tweaked this this AM.

02-15-2006, 01:41 PM
Bob? It would be helpful if you could note what we're to look for in each of the examples. I'm not sure what effect, specifically, you were after, in any of the examples except the one with the keyframable, multi-point color corrector.

02-15-2006, 03:03 PM
>I'm not sure what effect, specifically, you were after, in any of the >examples except the one with the keyframable, multi-point color corrector.
The last 2 color effects are a take off of another Color filter application
whose name escapes me at the moment.
The one with bearded gentlemen is named Soft Warm
You can see from the original that the face is smoothed and the tone is
warmed. (color definition: additional brown/red in the mids only)

The lady below is called bleached. Its a color effect that causes an extreme
contrast kind of look. You can the dif from the image tagged as original.

There are about 3 more which are popular color treatments most can not
be done without a 3 wheel color corrector.

02-15-2006, 04:43 PM
every change applied play in real time ?

02-15-2006, 06:51 PM
Realtime? Of course its realtime.

02-16-2006, 05:07 AM
Yeah, OK. I can see that the contrast is more dramatic, yet its treatment is quite smooth throughout the image, Bob!

Please know that I'm working at picking up your Bobs3Wheeler/ColorReplace V2 package by the 3rd of March, so thanks for making the special last during the time frame of "the next 30 days"...

Hey Bob,

Here's an idea for a plugin quickie that can make you a quick buck. A field order inverter.

Seems easy but its quite dependant on the input type. There are several ways to make fields. Weird Huh.. Inverting the order does not always work. And there there is reverse. DOH!

By the By folks 3Wheeler posts I am placing into the Bobs3Wheeler is released thread.

Been a while folks. I know. Its takes a bit of time to integrate this new
front end. I have a few bugs left and a bit of clean up.
Here is some examples. The new interface resembles 3Wheeler. This way
you get a common theme going with the interfaces. Here is a couple of
quick examples I made.
There is 2 new controls for each of the 5 color selections to tweak the color selections.
Try to get it done by end of next week and into the hands of you early 3Wheeler adopters ASAP. Thanks Bob

PS this image of the skyline was MUCH harder than it seems to
select colors in. The windows in hotels reflect the sky color. OOPS..
But with the new Multipoint Polygon mask I was able to do this.

Looks like its ready to go.
I have to give it to a few 3Wheel people first to see if its AOK.
Any takers?
Here quick demo clip. You will see Original then the altered.

Hi Bob finally got round to update my VT2 to 4.6 (and 5 ) just waiting for it to arrive where can I buy the colour corrector as all the suppliers you have listed seen not to have it listed??

05-14-2006, 01:35 PM
I am sorry I have been so run down from day to day.
I have a Color Replace V2 that I will distribute. Sorry for not doing it earlier.

The newer 3wheelers (Version 1.1) has bug that I have not been able to
catch. Every time I have tried to find it I have not been able to find it.

Eon5 Do you have that image of the girl?
It would be fun for me to try and do what they did.

no, but look at this demo

this plugin is amazing...

its a usefull "brainstorm link" for you ?

i hope yes :)

Well I've ordered my 3 Wheeler  Just wainting for my VT 4.6 now :D

But while we are on the subject of "brainstorm link" I like the way
Speedgrade DI works in it's

"first application to offer non-destructive color grading. This means the freedom to create, save, compare, and modify as many versions of a grade as you need. And since you build your own grades in layers, you have the freedom to choose the order of operations that best suits your approach."

Very intresting way of doing I think IMO :)

Hi Bobt I was wondering on the 3Wheeler if at a later date there could be a chance of maybe a tracking tool of sorts or a master pointer that you add to an image.

As an example
I want to turn a back ground black & white but have a subject in colour now using the current mask feature I have to move and keyframe all the points at every set of frames the main subject moves, is there a way of say have a master point that can I can use to keyframe to the main subject and the main mask the one with all the points on it be a child of it.

So as long as the subject does not change it's shape too much all you have to keyframe the master point with the main subjects movement. Rather than moving all your points with the subject? Could save alot of time on a mask with a quiet a few points in it.
Just a thought anyway :)

I agree.. I will try to keep it in mind. Thats a toughie though.
Many things move besides the points you are looking at.
But it would be an interesting math problem.
