Very cool indeed, I like it. The thingies look a bit dry though, for beeing underwater thingies. Some faked SSS might make them look a lil' bit more organic.

Doodled with it a little in PS, hope you don't mind. :)

I was thinking about SSS, hopfully lw9 will have it :)

you what you did looks really good in photoshop, do you mind telling roughly how you achieved that ?

lot of good work on your website too

You can achieve decent enough SSS with the use of gradients in LW. After all, if it looks cool it doesn't matter if it's not accuratly calculated.

Uhm, what I did in Photoshop was something along the lines of duplicating your image as a new layer, ran Find Edges filter and then inverted and desaturated the colors. Then changed the layer to Linear Dodge, and applied a slight gaussian blur. Try it out and you will get something similar. I also "dodged" the tips of your thingies a bit to increase the SSS effect there.

Really like this image. Do those things move? What are they? I'm scared.

I like the second colors better. And the PS tweaks. Keep up the good stuff, would love to see an animated post...

I did those steps and it worked great, thanks ! :)
I didn't want to work more on it in 3D.. I just wanted to finish it..

I started this image after seeing a photo of a 'cameleon' Shrimp hiden into lots of 'comatules' and it looked really nice..
I knew I could not exactly reproduce it because there were like hundreds of tentacles.. but I wanted to try.. and then I lost kind of interest in it I guess..
(I started 2 weeks ago.. and worked on it sometimes after work..)

those comatules are like starfish, and as it says on the book, that species of shrimp (that was hidden in it), lives between east cost of africa and australia..

those things are not animated but it could be possible.
each tentacles have 20 bones with 2 IK goal..

in that picture there are 39 tentacles, total of 903 bones..
each tentacle is 24 000 polys.. total of 900 000.

it was kind of slow when moving the IK goal..

and here the final picture, Big thanks to Fozz

Nice work, looks even better now! And no need to thank me, I'm just happy someone listened to me for once. Lightwavers ain't doing enough post processing as it is now, and I'm bored of all the standard LW renders that looks rendered. Every render benefits from some Photoshoping, I even try to do more and more in Photoshop for each image I do. Faster, easier, better looking and more fun that way, so why not, as long as it's not animations. ****, I even Photoshop all my WIP renders. (or as the correct term is, The image was enhanced using Adobe® Photoshop® software.)

forgive my ignorance but what is "sss" and how did it made his composition stronger? I'm trying to learn as much as I can from you master :)

Oh & nice work by the way...love your lighting, texturing, & the postion of the tenticales. they look as though there floating in water & not holding itself up if that make sence

thanks Darrell, SSS is for subsurface scattering, you can find more info on it at :

I did not use any in that scene.. because I don't have any SSS plugin and did not think about faking it..

d'oh! I do a LOT of post in PS. pretty much all grain/DOF I do in PS. ...and here I thought that just made me a less-skilled LWer!

That stuff about it not being used as a verb... man why the heck are they so picky??

I just wish I had the resources to heavily post-process animations, and not just stills (as in Apple Shake) arrgh...

Darrell--you should also know that G2 is not the only way to do SSS; there are some cheaper plugins (forgot what, but a quick search of the forums should bring them up) as well as some post-processing tricks out there.

JML--great image.. not much else to say. I really like the detail.
