View Full Version : New Video Available: Modeling a Head with Splines

12-16-2005, 09:19 PM
I have a new CD available. It covers modeling a head with splines.
Its something Ive been meaning to do for awhile.
Ive used Splines for modeling back when that was ONLY organic modeling
tool in LightWave. After Subpatches were added into Modeler many have
either ignored Splines or have given up in frustration.
Everything in LightWave revolves around making polys. I use Splines
as a quick and easy way to layout polygons for the head and a simple
way to use them to setup the ears. The tutorial also demonstrates
how to manipulate the object once you patch the splines and how
to control and change flow etc.
You can see more information or purchase the CD here:
If you have any questions dont hesitate to let me know.
Have a Merry Christmas. :)

SplinePimp has a nice ring to it, but still, SplineGod says it all. ;)

Ok, heres an image of the spline cage and finished model from the tutorial. Since the whole video is a bit under 4 hrs it gives a pretty good idea how fast a head can be modeled using the technique. The ears are done with splines using a technque I also cover in the 1001 tips and tricks book from wordware.

Heres the wireframe overlaid on top of the reference I used. You can see that it matches very closely.

I learned how to build spline cages for character models from Larry in 1999. Since then it's been the only way for me to precisely translate my hand-drawn model sheets (http://www.celshader.com/images/bboards/s-head01-small.gif) into finished celshaded models (http://www.celshader.com/gallery/lore/). Spline modeling also comes in handy when you need precise control over your subpatch cages.

And they stay crunchy in milk :)
Those were the days eh Jen? Seems like a century ago :)

BTW thanks Steve. Heres the reference I was using too.

I learned how to model aircraft parts with splines from Larry. I have reinvented my job at work.

Now I earn a paycheck using LightWAVE. Thank’s Larry.

Ya, I got my first assist in using LW by using Larry's training (but the compression you used on those videos made reviewing multiple times painful as it would hesitate).

You ever ship that book (1001 tips and tricks) to the people who signed up for one of your courses Larry? (It was one of your offers - remember?)

Anyway, character anim is what I am wrestling with now.

Hmmm training...

Thanks Lester. Very neat stuff youve been doing. Glad that I could help :)
