you can do that with follower and some nulls.

-create a null and give it some bones ( maybe 5 ). Make sure you parent all the bones to this null ( so no child bones ) and leave them at the default rest length for this example

-then add a null ( motion_null ) and create a nice motion for it to test the bones.

-add another null ( let's call it Null_01) and add follower to it. Select the first null ( motion_null ) in the "item to follow" drop down menu and give it a path delay of 1.0. You only need the XYZ motion, so you can deactivate the HPB and XYZ scale channels.

-clone the null 5 times ( let's number them Null_02, Null_03 etc. ) and increase the path delay for each null with 1.0. So "Null_02" gets a path delay of 2.0, the third one 3.0 etc. etc.

-now select the first bone, and also add follower to it and make it follow the "motion_null". Again, only in the XYZ position channels. And in the motion panel select the first null ( Null_01 ) as a target so it will point in the right direction.

-now select the second bone, add follower and make it follow "Null_01" and select "Null_02" as the target.

I think you'll get the point, just continue for the rest of the bones and you'll have a nice bone chain.

good luck.

Don`t forget to uncheck the `After IK` option in the Follower panel, or you`ll get strange results.

You can but it can be quite tedious to setup. What are you doing because there might be other easier ways to do what you need to do. :)
