I think everyone on here should start posting their age. That way, if you're under 21 or over 40, you get a special prize.

Just messing with you, man. This looks really nice. Any chance we could see the finished vid? Also... are the texture maps on the cocoon hand-painted? They look really sweet.

Thanks guys.

marble_sheep:
Haha, I figured I could get some peeps to click link to prove me wrong :)

The cocoon was made using dynamics modeling, I made some "leafs" in modeler
which were just flat subdivided polys. Mapped a leaf texture to it.
Then I took these "leafs" loaded them into layout, mad a collision ball with a
gravity controller that "sucks" toward the ball. After setting up the correct
soft bodies on the leafs I got them to get "glued" onto the collision ball, with correct wrinkles etc. Worked out really well. Then I just made some transperant layers with "hair" maps on them to make the cocoon have a "spiderwebby"
look on the outer layer.

The video is coming along great, I think it's looking very good.

Here are a couple of more stills from production:

Here is the spot...

A little about Autism first. Autism usually starts after a child is a few years old.
They can get very weird; screaming, no emotions or compassion, not able to
think clearly. This is caused by chemicals, bad food etc. in our environment.
Apparently 1 in 150 now become Autistic.

People with Autistic children are the target audience.

lol I expected more out of a 19 year old.... (just kidding, although i must say it could be interpreted as conceited)

AS far as the concept, its solid. I like it.

execution..some problems, like the foot poking out of the pod looked cheesy and there is a weird lighting pop when he is about to take off. I found that a bit distracting.

Not bad overall though (for a 19 year old :D ). :hammer:

I showed this to my mother, she works with this kind of thing and she was flabbergasted, I had to make 2 copies on CDs (only for showing her colleages at work!)

Disagree with the previous poster, there is nothing that affects communication and feel. Just really really great work, go and get yourself drunk!

great work man!

only one piece of critcism and that is on the second text screen. (i opened a door..) it ends a little quick.. not that it needs a fade out, but i would say leave the text up a little longer, almost the same amount of time as the first shot.

habaņero.
Thats great it touched your mother. I hope it brings awareness that there
is something you can do about autism.

"go and get yourself drunk!"
HAHAA, while everyone else I know is
doing exactly that I am usually staying up late working/learning...
animation, directing, camera work, music, lighting, compositing... SOMETHING :)

Seduceandrob(lol, finally got your name)
Did you play it with audio? as the quick text cut is for emotional effect
on the large "closing" sound....

AdamAvenali

i did notice that and figured that is what you were going for, i still feel that the sound effect should play at the same time the text cuts away.. it might have been the internet lag, but it seemed that the text cut away, then there was a half-second or so of pause before the sound effect played  but either way its a nit pick and you can do what you want haha

hairy_llama

Yeah, i have the feeling it is internet lag, as is does cut with the sound... someone else said they had the same problem, they were on a 1.2ghz laptop.

haha yeah thats it more than likely, but i'm on a 3.2 pent 4 with 4 gig or Ram

What sony camera is that on the pic? looks like one of the new HD models, is it the fx or the zx one? also what program did you guys use to edit the spot?

hairy_llama
11-13-2005, 08:44 AM
It's not sony. It's the panasonic dvx100 DV camera. With a special hardware modification
to get RAW 1590X960 tiff sequences out of it, recorded in RT to a computer
system.

The new "HD" DV cameras have such high compression rates
that they are not much good for green-screen work, color timing etc.

edited on premiere.

Nice spot.

The lag on systems would be caused by the not very streaming friendly 1.8Mbps VBR the wmv was encoded at. Makes for a nice picture once downloaded. But hard to fit that size bandwidth thru even most Broadband pipes.

great work. I think the spot turned out excellent. Your camera sounds awesome, too.

the whole 19yo thing does sound so concieted. The work is good, it speaks for itself.

monovich,
Thanks.
"the whole 19yo... "
Got you to click though, didn't I? ;)

BTW, for those interested...
This was all rendered out in layers. A seperate layer for each object/element in the scene. Later in compositing this allowed extremely quick lighting tweeks etc. One thing that LW really needs is a layering system...

Here is a screengrab of the "wings" scene... After matching camera coordinates and settings I just did a manual track by hand.

I'm guilty of clicking only on threads with lots of replies, which means there is something remarkable inside.
