I finally discovered the wonders of using gradients in conjunction with procedurals to make interesting textures..I did a test render (F11) on only the object for which I created this surface...a 600x 900 image.

the enhanced medium render took almost 9 hours!

the same image without this gradient layer in surface, but with caustics, highest render quality, raytraced reflections and shadows, 3 lights at 2400x3600 would take 2.5 hours max on the same Mac!

does this experience match others'?

heh! sorry...I chucked it. but the surface would remind you of a highly-figured agate.

VERY interesting. I had the gradient on top layer..the mode was based on previous layer..top node was light, bottom was black, and three nodes toward top (light-dark-light) handled the 'bleed' of the concentric amorphous rings.

it was a good lesson in how it worked..
