can you get microsoft visual c++ for free?

I don't know, but why do you ask on this Newtek forum? Is there a lightwave issue with C++?
I'd suggest checking the microsoft pages?

For the time being the beta version of VC++ Expression Edition ver 2005 is free, how ever I think there is a time limit on the license and the commercial version should be around $50 US.

If you go to college see if your school is part of the MSDNAA program. You have to meet some requirements to get MSVS Free one being you have to be enrolled in a course by a department that subscribes to MSDNAA.

If you are still in High School see if the college near you is part of the MSDNAA program and offers courses to High School students. That would be the only way to get a legitimate copy of MSVS Free.

Check to see if your school has it (http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearch.aspx).
