After messing around a bit with Modo, I found the only thing that I really liked that wasn't easy to do in Lightwave was to use a background layer as a constraint for points in the foreground.

Someone mentioned that there was a plug-in or "Lightwave-way" of doing this; I'd appreciate a pointer in the right direction. Modo's cool, but I have way more expertise with LW, plus Fprime, Sasquatch, host of other stuff. . .I'd rather just figure out how to do this one cool thing in LW than use another app (I own them both. . . I buy a lot of stuff, just to see what's new/interesting, but LW remains where I do most of my work).

I'd be grateful to anyone with info.

Not sure what you are trying to do. There is BG conform and the plugin Dodgy gave the link to in this thread:

I haven't used it yet. But there is this other little undocumented trick you can do. In the same layer, if you have a series of points that are either on a poly or just floating and you have another polygon to add points to just select the points you want the new poly conformed to, (this will be done by by adding points to it with the add points tool), then switch to polygon selection mode, select the poly you want to add points to and then use the add points tool and click on the edge. It will create points in the order of selection that are still selected in point selection mode to the poly edge. The selected poins will still be there but new ones created on the poly that conform to their position.

There was a thead on this awhile ago but I have no idea where.

Hope this was clear and helpful enough. Beyond that, not sure whjat you want to do. If you explain more I am sure there is a plugin that will do what you need.

what I'm trying to do:

in Modo, there's a neat feature were you can stick an object in a background layer, and essentialy anything you do in the foreground layer will be contrained to the surface of the object. . . its not a function you apply, its simply that anything you draw or point you create will be on the surface, so its fully interactive.

Very useful in doing something like: creating a belt, clothing, that sort of thing.

Nice. Don't know of anything interactive off hand. The link Dodgy gave had a pretty cool apply solution.

Wonder if there is anything headed down the pipe our way in LW9.

Othere than that, a plugin?

Not exactly what you're looking for but SP_Clone LE 1.2 will clone objects from your background layer to selected polys on the foreground respecting the direction of the polygon normals: http://www.wagglydog.com/lw/

I do know these plugs, but they're not interactive-- in case a Newtek guy happens along, consider this a feature request; as I say, its the only thing in Modo that I've used and said "I can't figure out how to do this in LW"

My usual LW practice now is to take an object, grab some points from that object, and then make a spline patch using those points, in the foreground layer, leaving object in BG, so I can see overlaps, pokethroughs. . .works for clothing and whatnot, but it'd be nice to just "draw on" the surface.

I'm told Silo's "topology brush" does the same sort of thing. . .

wow, this threat has been here alone for a while...
A lot has happened since the last post, 3D Coat is not even mentioned here, CORE is almost ready to get his 3D reign back! and i'm still trying to find out this old question.

Still no luck, any news anyone?

just to add that CORE is not ready and it wont be, so a lot has hapenned since I wrote the above...and i'm still trying to find out a "background constraint" solution in/for LW.

Interactive tool Push (released 4 years ago) from TrueArt's Modeling Pack is the answer http://modelingpack.trueart.eu
It is in Christmas Promotion till 31 December..

thanks for the info Sensei, I watched the Push tool video a while ago and although interesting it's not exactly what I'm looking for: A "retopology" tool.

I'm looking at modo's "constraint to background", maya´s "make object live" or even sds max's Wrapit kind of thing.

TrueArt's Push tool is more like an "after tool" not very suitable for (example) retopo a head.

It's just one mouse button press after using EasyMesh to project geometry on something in fg.
Then Push is sliding geometry on bg (if you move mouse while pushing left mouse button).

Then you have a couple of freeware plugins which allow working based off a background layer. Can't remember the names off the top of my noggin' but I *think* they were Pictrix or UME plugins.
