I'm building a new PC and want it to get the most out of LW9. As far as LW9 is concerned is there a difference between having one dual-core CPU or two single-core CPUs? And if so what's the better choice?

BTW I know that rendering is and will be multithread, but I would like to know about the actual workflow.

LightWave won't care or tell the difference. There MAY be speed differences, but they aren't going to be because on is dual core and one is 2 chips, it will be due to processor design. I would put an AMD64 x2 up against the lower end Opterons for speed, but high end dual Opterons might beat an X2. The X2 setup is best bang for buck (cheaper mobos, cheaper memory, cheaper than 2 opterons), I suggest that.

p.s. Intel dual core kinda sucks, not worth mentioning

Maybe you can help me with a bit more info.

How does the X2 compare with a dual-core Opteron, like the Opteron 265? Also how would the x2 stack up against two opteron 250s?

I'm trying to spec out the best PC for under $2,300.

to give you an idea:

opteron 250 run at 2.4 GHz and have 1 Mb L2 cache

Athlon 64 X2 (dual core) 4800+ : dual 2.4 GHz with 1 MB L2 cache

so the speed should be similar, i think the 4800+ should lead a bit due to faster memory (not registered)

the only advantage to the opteron 250 is that motherboards can take more than 4 GB of memory while motherboard for 4800+ are limited to 4 GB.

As for opteron 265, they are dual core but run at 1.8 GHz, this mean that for single thread part (mostly everything except rendering) an opteron 250 or 4800+ will run 33% faster than opteron 265.

but in rendering, dual opteron 265 give you 4 processors

and asuming that the gain from 2 to 4 is similar from the gain from 1 to 2 cpu in redering time (often around 1.8x), and since rendering is directly proportioanl to frequency, a rough estimation would give:

- if dual opteron 250 (or 4800+) have a speed of 100

- dual operon 265 would have 100 /2.4 *1.8 *2 (pure power) of 150 (that if you render an image per cpu with scremernet)

- for rendering a single picture we would get 135 ((100 /2.4 *1.8) * 1.8)
