View Full Version : What are you looking forward to the most in LW 9?

Just thought I'd make a thread here while we wait for LW9.

What is the feature you are looking forward to the most in Lightwave 9.

I think mine is better integration with Z-Brush. I have a few Z-Brush models that don't look right in LW yet. Hopefully 9 will fix this.

Also a question for anyone in the know. Is LW64bit technically the same as Lightwave 9 32bit with 64bit advantages or is the 64bit version unrelated to features in 9?

Edges and ngons. And hopefully a way to setup smartskin in Layout with the addition of the modeler toolset to layout.

Folks here shutting up about as to when LW 9 is coming out... or 8.5 for that matter!!! :neener:

Same here- edges and ngons are a long time coming.

Also looking forward to the OpenGL 2 stuff. Technically it's in 8.5, but... well... don't have that yet either. ;-)

Same here.
:i_agree: , and more new features, such as SSS, photon mapping.,etc

Speed (GUI & render) and rock Solid (even with big fat scenes)

Workflow enhancement (fewer but better tools with presets and/or tool instancing)

On time delivery ;)

Render speed increases, a better SDK allowing more and better plugins, Mac version compiled in something less horrible than CodeWarrior, viewport performance enhancements, nodal texturing, adaptive subdivision... errr... I don't have to pick just one thing, right?

Render Speed at the tippy-top.

Still wishing for BodyPaint 3D tools in LW. Maybe in LW10

I'm looking forward to lens shaders since I do work with dome animations.

LW64bit being the one released with LW8.5?
If so, it'll just the 64bit version of LW8.5. ie it's not related to 9, I suspect LW 9 will come with it's own 64 bit version.

1. mega fast rendering speed a kazillion polys per second should be enough
2. file linking. like in max or viz where dwg files are linked and automatically updates when dwg modified...
3. modeler in layout
4. snap (end point, center, mid point, tangential, bla bla bla ) i'm a cad guy
5. stability
6. with these new features hope it will still run in my old system.

1. Faster rendering with global illumination
2. opening SDK for 3rd party apps
3. modeling in layout

Ok, so the 64bit versions are at least based on the point versions?

Was wondering if it was a whole premise of it was the same as the usual LW. Hardware benefits notwithstanding.

Thanks for the info.

Render Speed Specially in Global Illumination for Animation
A dream or a possible reality in 6 months?

Yeh, I'll have to admit that once I get z-brush models into LW really nicely that my next problem will be utilizing radiosity. So I suppose my #2 will be an optimized radiosity render.....I.E. render speed.

Captain Obvious

1. Micropoly displacement
Technically speaking, LW[9] won't have micropoly displacement, it will use adaptive subdivision. It's not really the same thing. ;)

Karmacop

Which is good, because as far as I know micropoly displacement only works with scanline rendering, not raytracing. Of course I'm sure there's ways around it these days, so Newtek can give us that in a LW9 update ;)

Maybe you're right, but as I understand it seems to work like micropolydisplacement or even better. However I don't care how it works, I'm pleased with what I've been seen in the demos so far. I think it will be enough for me.

So I change my list. :D

1. Adaptive subdivision instead of Micropoly displacement.
2. N-gons
3. Better OpenGL perfomence
4. Better Dynamics
5. Modelling tools in Layout
6. Rendering speed
7. All the other new features included in LW9

Exactly what I was about to write. I'm also hoping for Newtek to make shaders and the like available to third party renderes like FPrime (although hopefully the speed increase will make FPrime less necessary for what I do).

According to the preliminary features list, shader support in Fprime and the like is planned.
