View Full Version : What additional Renderers are available for LW?

Somebody asks about MentalRay, somebody about RenderMan or KrayTracer, however I would like to ask, what are the additional renderers/raytracers that can be used with LightWave to render scenes. Additionally, is the output of these one satisfying or weak..

I have heard of fPrime renderer being successfully implemented into LW. and that is basically all.

Moreover, does anybody know a way, how to get LW scene rendered by MentalRay, please?

additional renderers:-

4.Swift [cartoon, celshade, flash]
5.lightscape 3.2 [see past thread on how to with current lw]

to use mental ray on a lightwave scene you'l need to buy point oven 1.4 then you can use your transfered lightwave scene in:-
1. 3dsmax 7.5 and mental ray
2.MAYA 6.0+
3.Xsi 4.2 foundation and above

also you can use the dot xsi plugin to ove lightwave models to xsi
3ds export
FBX export

of course with point oven you can take advantage of:-

RENDERMAN on maya [the cheapo maya renderman version too!]

Vray on 3dsmax
scanline on 3dsmax including radiosity and light tracer
final render.

messiah studio's renderer via messiah studio workstation link and/or point oven

plenty of options for lightwave with point oven!

ain't point oven cool?

Hello, you recomended buying Point Oven, however i was able to download it for free from its home page.

The plugin is freely downloadable, but it won't do anything unless you pay for a license.

The info on Point oven is somewhat misleading..IMO

It won't just convert a lightwave scene to a maya scene..
You'll have to re-surface and re-light the shot completely in maya (or whichever package you'll use)
What it WILL do is convert model (and deformations) and camera data to the chosen package.
But it falls well short of the mark in terms of describing it as means to a rendering solution.

yes, your correct in your description of what it does and does not....

but it will enable you to use your models and animation in another package and therefore take advantage of their renderer and their shading system...something that most other transition apps' file types struggle with on large projects like dot xsi or fbx...

it's 'an option'....nice to have options!

i'll be getting it for max to lightwave conversion so i can use mo cap's f rom character studio back in lw as long as it will work in max 7.0/8.0 and lightwave 8.0 [and lw9.0....]

and the price is great.

If you want to do Renderman you could use Lightman (http://www.td-grafik.de/softw/lightman.php) its not free but they have a demo.

There is also Air (http://www.sitexgraphics.com/html/air.html) Renderer.
