View Full Version : My Comprehensive Snap Tool Request - NT Please read

OK, I've had a lot of time with modeler this past couple of weeks and I really think it really needs some snapping tools. I work with AutoCAD at work the Snapping Tools the have on there is great so I've devised a plan on how LW can use that and I know I've requested these before but on this one I have image props :D

Introducing my proposal for Snap Tools.

Here's the numeric options:
As you can see there will be a Foreground and Background Tab. These will relate to the layers. That way it will have its on separate snap settings.

'Action' Button:

Most of the checkbox are self-explanatory like snap along edges, snap to points and snap along poly. But here are images of the others.

Perimeter and Outer Perimeter:
Basically it snaps to the outer perimeter of an object regardless of edges, points and polys. very useful on the perspective view.

It's similar to perimeter but weights in more towards the outer most area. Like say if I wanted to draw out a polyline from a top of a sphere to the top of another sphere.

Center Select and Intersec:
Basically snaps to the center of any selected points/edge/polygons.

Snaps where 2 edges and or polygons intersect.

Is it doable? What cha all think?

IT sure is doable but it's just matter of time and will from new DEV team :). I hope they'll find time to doing it in 9.0 if they didn't already planned in 8.5.

Good suggestions Wickter, very good :).

Great mock up :)

I'm hoping with 9 that modeler will be able to have master plugins too, so that not only can you have an lscript commander for modeler, but you could have plugins like this running all of the time as a filter for other plugins :)

Very good ideas

Thanks Everyone. Sorry fo the late reply. My copy of Vue 5 came in and...well you know what happens. :D

I'm also busy improving my modeling skills since I'm trying to solve the problem why eveyone elses Lightwave work looks to be Lightspeed ahead of my own in terms of quality. But by doing a lot of modeling I tend to lthink of features that I think should be in lightwave. So I'll be posting all these ideas on this forum before I forget them completely.

Thanks again, I do hope the dev team takes notice and consider them.

Wickster, those are superb ideas.

I was to write a simple proposal of how we desperately need (snap to) / (move confroming to) background, but your proposal is better.

There are people who think snap to background geommetry is *just* for reducing poly count of a high poly model, and say they never needed such a thing, but it is not only that, but a heck lot more, and they simply don't know what they are missing.

The only thing to keep in mind, that these should work for all tools whenever possible.

Lots of requests have been made for a decent set of snapping tools over the past few versions.

What we got was GridSnap.

....and still no single keystroke to turn the grid on or off.

Well here's hoping it gets past the filter this time.

While we are at it.... I vote (once again) that Newtek should reintroduce the handy little Align Points plugin that they driopped after version 6 for a much more cumbersome method of aligning points. At least put it back in the legacy folder so people can make their own minds up about it.

you have to keep your eyes on LWCAD for a more advanced snaping system. We are currently developping the new LWCAD 2, with almost all types of snaping
We are taking care to make lightwave a comfort place for all CAD users and polygonal models.
I'll be back to post some of the new features and screen shots ASAP.

I've been waiting for decent snapping features for a long time! This type of functionality would be awesome. I really like the option of having foreground and background snapping in separate tabs the way you arranged it. Let's hope NewTek has seen this thread and are willing to implement it. :newtek: :lwicon:

For folks interested, the sale on the SP_Move2 (http://spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10225) Modeler plugin (which offers some snapping features) ends on 1/14/2006. For $10 (http://www.pictrix.jp/lw/buy/index_e.html), it's worth considering.

Thanks Jen, having been the one to nag NT for snapping tools all the time, I actually bought PICTRIX's SP_Move2 as soon as he announced it was on sale to the public. You do get alot for $10. It kinda satisfied my hunger for snap moving...until I think of other things to request NT for.
