Is there anyway to turn this seashell pattern into 3d? I have tried working with the seashell plug-in, but can't reproduce this. Any suggestions?

Something like this any good?

That's great. How did you do it?

Ok, I'll try to explain this clearly, using another image:

First create a quarter of a sphere. Then make a polyline from the 2 points shown. Use the seashell tool to extrude said polyline.

The idea is to create two rails from the outer then inner row of points of the spiral.

You can then rail clone the quarter sphere along them.

A curve made from the leading edge of the quarter is also Rail Extruded to combine with the clones.

I used the thickener plugin on the cloned and extruded shapes.

I get the quater circle part, and making the poly line, after that i"m lost. I understand that your using the curves to rail extrude the shape, but how do you get the two curve? That's where I'm confused.

Use the sea shell tool on that two point polyline. The resulting shape gives you the points you need to make the two curves.

Ok. Is this correct? Now what?

I got the outer skin pretty much, but I can't get the inner shapes.

Is there two curves? one made from the outside row of points and one from the inside row? If so: Multiply> Duplicate> Rail Clone.

Ideally, the two curves should be on the same plane with each other. Ensured by having 'Shift per loop' set to zero in the numeric seashell dialogue. Also you can adjust 'Scale per loop' interactively, to get the two edges of the seashell shape to your liking.

I hope this makes sense, I'm not good at written explanations :)

Oh yes you do the outer shape and inner shapes seperately, on different layers. Outer: Rail Extrude. Inner shapes: Rail Clone.

I think I have it. Thanks so much. This will work. Thanks for all your time and effort.

My pleasure, that looks marvellous.

I tweaked the rail clone so the fin spacing gets wider as they extrude out.

Looking good. Be interested to see the end result.
