Hi Gang:

Being very new to Lightwave, I was just wondering if any of you can suggest a really good tutorial book for LW8. I need some major hand-holding. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take prospectors advise, "Inside LW8" is the place to start and will get you off the ground and moving quickly...

Also download the various tutorials located here at the Newtek site, they'll help a bunch...

'Inside Lightwave 8'. is a great book. But sometimes, watching someone demonstrate is so much easier to follow. So be sure to check out the video tutorials elsewhere on this site. And here are a few of my favourite bookmarks:

All the above sites have free video tutorials as well as paying ones. Personally I find learning by watching easier.

To be honest, I never really liked Dan Ablans Inside LW series. I say this after having read both ILW5.6 (terrible), and ILW6 (a bit better at everything) a long time ago and browsing through ILW7 at the bookshop. The writing-style is far too american (=twice as much text as necessary) for my taste, there are too few images, and I never really felt they gave any explanations of why things are the way they are. The books just felt like huge 123-step tutorials. In my opinion the Get Started Guide that came with my LW looks better planned, with easier to read text, more images that follow along with the text, and it's shorter, which means you'll get into LW so much quicker and won't have time to get bored. Since it's based on Tim Albees Essential Lightwave 3D 8, that's the book I would recommend.

EDIT: Just skimmed through my Get Started book. The 10th chapter on Facial Modeling stinks. It uses/teaches the worst possible technique, the build-the-face-flat-then-add-depth-technique. This is why I don't buy these kind of learning material anymore. Too many compromises and bad suprises. But the book still seem like a nice alternative to ILW as an introduction to LW.

We didn't get the training manual here in Europe. I'm totally new to Lightwave too, but having moved over from TrueSpace, its a bit of a help. I'm learning from the manual and I find it quite good. Would love the training manual though ;) .

Inside LW8 is an excellent book. It also comes with a DVD with good video tutorials.
Compared to previous incarnations, it is a big improvement and one of the best books for the beginner to buy. Browse through it first in your local large bookstore like Borders. Well worth it. :)

You can learn a lot by doing tutorials found on the net. This is how I learned to begin with.

I'd have to go with Isinide Lightwave 8 as well. The new version actually has many great explanations and simple to understand tutorials.

A very good all around book. I just pulled it off the shelf again to study dynamics.

I also recomend, as more of a handbook as a suplement to your study, the book, "LW 8 1001 tips and tricks. Lots of great beginning and advanced tips in all areas of lightwave from A to Z by some of the greatest Lightwavers around right now. This with lots of all around common sense tips as well as tips for configuring your system you won't find in the manual.

If you are thinking about Character Animation Timothy Albee's Character Animation is highly recomended. Even if you don't agree wioth hoow he riggs characters he teachs invaluable lessons in the art of animation, the kind of which you will only get from the great masters yet applied to the art of 3D animation.
