Have you ever seen the scenes of the asteroid blazing across the ocean and leaving a long splash or wake from the pressure and wind of it's passage? Or how about the F-16 20 feet above the water surface at Mach 1? The two wakes from the jet wash? I can think of a couple of approaches, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas? Thanks.

pre-render a wake sequence and map that as an additive alpha on top of the sea?
tie its movement across the water to the comet or whatever via surfaces or just copying one of the axis motions?

Interesting idea. I hadn't thought of maps. I was thinking along the lines of morphing a mesh surface to get "wakes" coming straight up out of the water and maybe particles to create the spray or vaporized water effect. I'm thinking the wake has to be several feet tall depending on the size of the asteroid/jet or whatever.

Might try a displacement map on a sub-d'd mesh. You could further the effect by putting a ripple filter in After effects on the black and white wake pattern you design. I just did something like this with the wake of a ship passing through water. it worked pretty well for my purpose...

Here's the scene files if you want them

(you'll need to calculate the Cloth FX)

Very cool. Thanks for the tip - I'll definately file that away in the back of my brain for later use!

Thanks to all for taking the time to share your ideas. Pooby, I checked out the other thread and downloaded your files. Looking forward to checking them out. Looks like an ingenious technique. Thanks again.

Hello Pooby,

Could you post a sample what 3D cloth looks like in your other post.

Thank you
