View Full Version : Tutorial on weight map creation??

I can see how to use weight maps but darned if I can find a good explanation on how to create them. Has to be real simple. But, how do you create a weight map for a cylinder that is 0% on one end and 100% on the other? Like in that video tutorial that shows the weight map falloff for the move and rotate tool.

I guess what I am asking where do I find that tutorial on creating and animating the mantaray which I believe came out with LW 7.0??

As to the weight falloff it's pretty simple. (LW8)

1)First create a map with a value of 0:

Click W on the bottom right and select "New" from the drop down on the right of that and type in a name into the requester, set the value to 0

Also you can choose Map/Weight/NewWeightMap

2)Then chose the button below that, Wieght. hit "n" to bring up the numeric requester and choose Linear as the fall off type and then Automatic on the Y axis, enter 100 in the change field. Click apply.

As to animating the Manta Ray that is involving rigging, which is another story but this will get you started with some basics on creating a wieght map. I don't have any tutorials to recomend but you might look on this site.

There is TrueArt's plug-in to read/write weight and other vertex maps from/to normal pictures..

f.e. you could transfer painted vertex color-map to texture and add details in Photoshop or back-up or copy vertex map to similar object..
