need a new mac.

i have a $4k budget. i have a two monitors, a 20 and a 17 now that are getting old.

i have an old 9600 with an 800 mghz g4 card and a mac mini.

should i just go for broke on the cpu, or settle for less and get a nice monitor, too.

Apple release new machines a couple of weeks ago....

You can get the new dual 2ghz along with a 23" display for $3500. it comes with 512K, you can get 2gb of memory at crucial for an additional $250.

or...

get the "old" (previous revision) 2ghz G5 here...
http://www.smalldog.com/product/12653222
For a $100 less you get only an 8X DVD-r/CD-r instead of the 16x dvd-R/rw/cd-rw DOUBLE SIDED DRIVE and the old Nvidia 5200 card
-but-
you get the PCI card slots and the memory capacity (8gb) of the current 2.3ghz and up powermacs. This extra memory capacity will give you head room and the pro PCI slots will offer you better compatability in the future. Meanwhile the current 2ghz model has the motherbord specs of the old 1.8 ghz offering which was the entry level G5. Also, I believe you can later update your DVD drive if need be as well your graphics card... either way it will run circles around your current system

You use up all of your 4K but you end up with a dual 2ghz, 2.5 GB, 23" display along with more desktop space. Keep your Mini for email, photos, music, etc. unload your 9600....

good thoughts, both.

get rid of my 9600, though? no way. it has 8 pci slots for cripes sake! plus it's the only scsi machine i have and my scanner is scsi.

plus, i've grown attached to it. it's an old work horse.

heh.

lol...

If you're planning on getting a dual 2, get the prior revision, as the new dual 2's don't have PCI-X slots.

my thing was always to get the most cost effective machine and fill it with ram, hard drives, the "best" Graphics card...

right now if I had 4k to spend on a mac...
dual 2 gig. with a 23"

at apple store, that leaves you with $500 to throw into upgrades.
if you went with the dual 2.3 gig... you'd have 2 dollars left over from $4000
