"Point limit per polygon increased from 1024 to 16383:
LightWave [8] version 8.3 has improved upon the EPSF Loader. These changes include the above mentioned point limit increase for polygons. Also, Import options now include EPS files up to Illustrator CS and AI files up to version 8."

Alright! I have been waiting for this for a long time!
Good job Guys!

Major Updates
-------------------------------------------------------------
Layout:
PSD Exporter
A major update to the PSD Exporter brings more options and filters
when rendering and exporting the layers into Photoshop. The menu
layout has been reorganized for easier navigation, including new
filtering options.

Scene Editor
The Scene Editor has undergone some changes in version 8.3. Some
of these changes include additional menus and more selection sets
in current menus. A new Selection Zone, introduced in version 8.2,
has been created for manipulating multiple cells.

Vector Blur
The Vector Blur plugin has been improved in LightWave 3D version
8.3. See 8.3 addendum for information on limitations when using
Vector Blur.

Hypervoxels-Relative Particle Age Gradient
A new gradient option for Hypervoxels, the Relative Particle Age
Gradient allows effects based on the relative age of each particle.
This gradient is useful if you are using the random lifespan option
in Particle FX.

HyperVoxels-Blending Modes
A new option has been added to enable/disable the surface tension
of HyperVoxels. Checked, Blending will result in the HyperVoxels
connecting in close proximity. Unchecked, the HyperVoxels will not
connect in close proximity.

Modeler:
EPSF Loader
The point limit of 1024 for a single polygon has been lifted to
16383 in LightWave version 8.3, enhancing the type of EPS files
that can be imported in Modeler. This expansion for the point
limit is not limited to the EPSF Loader, but for all polygons.

Text Layers
The Text Layers tool allows you to type letters, numbers, and
other symbols and automatically have them beveled and extruded.
Text Layers also has multiple layers and settings options.

LScript:
The PLD Render Features have been implemented into LScripts.

SDK:
-Added the DTEVENT_BAKEZONECHANGE event to the Dopetrack API
-Updated line endings for Mac. Affects include/lwprtcl.h,lwfilter.h..
-Added a new standard particle buffer: LWPSB_RAGE
-Add internal buffers for backdrop and preeffect.
The following buffers are now available: backdrop and preeffect.
The backdrop buffer contains background imagery like the solid
color or gradient backdrop description.
-BRDF should not be part of the LWSDK.
Affects include/lwbrdf.h. File removed from public SDK.
-Fixed 64 bit address storage.
-update html for some 64bit info
-update lwo2 html for CURV additional vertex count bits
-lwpolygon.h has no support for PolygonServices in reality, so
the global #define was removed.
-Changed _WINDOWS to _MSWIN
-Added the 'maxPointsPerPoly' data member to the LWObjectFuncs
structure.

Detail Notes:

Scan Directory: When loading the program for the first time after
updating you may need to update your plugin list
which you can do by running scan directory which
is found in: Utilities > Plugins > Edit Plugins.

Text Layers: It is currently a known issue that the Text Layers
tool prevents you from changing view in the viewports
until the Text Layers tool is deactivated.

Layout&Modeler: If you experience any issues with your Product
Lock ID changing, you may need to update your
dongle drivers. You can download the latest
Sentinel Drivers at www.safenet-inc.com. For
additional help please contact NewTek Technical
Support.

I slapped together a very quick test of the new vector blur and it actually seems to be working properly as long as the object doesn't go ballistic on its movements. Here's vids of my little test: normal object movement (http://koti.mbnet.fi/~stupid/3D/vidz/vectorblur_hidas.avi), super-speed object movement (http://koti.mbnet.fi/~stupid/3D/vidz/vectorblur_nopea.avi). Blur length is 1000% and FPS is dropped from 30 to 10 for better frame analysis. As you can see, as long as the movement isn't ridicilously fast vector blur seems to be working just fine.

Yes, Windows users do need to update the Sentinel drivers to version 7.1 or later, as is mentioned in the readme.

Please note that Rainbow Technologies, the original manufacturers for the Sentinel line of hardware keys, merged with SafeNet, Inc.. SafeNet, Inc, is now the name of the combined company. For the latest Sentinel hardware key drivers, users will be able to check the SafeNet site:

Should these be installed before the download and with or without the dongle attached?

I've corrected the goof I made when putting the link into the message - link works now; and this info is also on the main downloads page for LightWave.

I didn't detach the dongle when I applied the driver update. I'm using a parallel dongle.

OK I've just downloaded and istalled 8.3. Gave myself a smack for not installing the sentinal drivers the first time. Got it to work the second, and jumped into modeler. Imagine my discapointment when the feature I was looking forward to didn't work. I use layers a lot, and have only started to name them. It bugs me the way that when I insert a layer it is named 'unamed' and all the other names move up, but when I delete a layer it doesn't. So all of your layer names are messed up. I thought that when I read the description of one of the fixes in 8.3 it would stop doing this. .........It didn't.

Am I missing something?

You need to check your WinZip settings and file associations. Rather than allowing the file to download, it is trying to automatically open it with WinZip, which corrupts the download.

hi

i was told by ben vost at newtek europe that the display bug in lightwave 8.0 for ati equipped macs such as the apple mac mini had been fixed with the 8.3 bug fix update...so i went ahead and bought an extra seat of lightwave just for my new mac...guess what?

yup...NO fix...modeler is UNUSABLE with lightwave 8.0 or lightwave 8.3....and i've just bought a seat of lightwave 8.0 for the sole purpose of running in on my mac mini...............

see the screen grab to see how unusable it is!....

in wireframe mode you can see i have selected the top half of the ball's points but in ANY shaded display mode the points nearest the view cannot be seen but the points hidden by the shaded polys on the far side can be!.........go figure!

i did send in a bug list to newtek.com and recieved no reply.........maybe they had already fixed it?

so...here i am with an UNUSABLE lightwave seat FOR MODELING...........can you please send me a version 7.5d or enable my new dongle for 7.5d so i can do some work on my mac whilst rendering on my pc please without haing to move my pc dongle over?......which the whole point of getting a new seat of lightwave....!

bah humbug!....[bug]

I see your post and screenshot -- I have a mac Mini -- mine doesnt' look like that.

Ok, so this makes me think of Apple and it's OS updates - what are your settings - os level (Tiger? 10.3.9?)

I have a mini -and it works fine -- also compared on a G5 -- looks ok there too.

it's the standard mac mini as it came in the box...

DigitalDeuce

you might also check or try "simple wireframe edges and points"

Hmm...can't seem to find 10.3.8. updater for osx on apple's site at the moment...i'm a new user on mac so not been around apple's site much as yet...
found 10.3.9. but don't know if i can/should get it...

hopefully i can call a friend tomorrow and see what he says [he's a long time mac user] i sholud do.

thanks for your help btw....good to know that "some" mac mini's are working properly.

http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty1.pl/product=05368&platform=osx&method=sa/MacOSXUpdate10.3.8.dmg

do i just run that to update 10.3.7 to 10.3.8?? it's 26mb

there's a combo version too 100mb what's that for?

as you can see i'm NEW on mac.... :o

Kuzey

Combo version is usually for those who are upgrading from a few versions prior...say from 10.3.5 or older.

Something like that.

Kuzey

cresshead
05-09-2005, 07:30 PM
okay!

i'll go get the 26mb version then...i'll hold off of 10.3.9 as duece has no display errors with 10.3.8 on his mac mini...

Kuzey
05-09-2005, 07:51 PM
Once you have 10.3.8 running use Software update (under the apple menu) to download additional software like security updates and what not.

Kuzey

cresshead
05-09-2005, 10:44 PM
well.... followed duece's advice and upgraded to 10.3.8.............
doesn't work........wish it did......

As a test....here's what i get with the demo of lightwave 7.5....what i'd hoped to see in lightwave 8.3....points displayed properly...remember this is lightwave 7.5 with the mouse bug...[you have to use tablet mode otherwise your object jumps a mile when you try to move it...]

and here's the result of the update to 10.3.8 with lightwave 8.3.........nothing!
invisible points again!......................drat.

if i'd have known that the mac o/s open gl display was this "twitchy" i wouldn't have bothered with one!

as my mother says..."you live n learn"....well some do!

Not that it's of any help, but I can assure you the problem is not with the Mac OSes OpenGL implementation. I use Maya, Modo, and ZBrush on the Mac daily, and none of them have OpenGL issues - their viewports are also blasingly fast in comparison. LW is the only app I've seen that has such trouble with OpenGL on the Mac platform.

There are a few GL issues with the ATI x800 card running under Tiger, but it's clearly a driver issue, and ATI is addressing it. For some reason, no one is able to 'track' down the issue with the disappearing points in LW on the Mac, but it certainly exists. It's ridiculous that the bug has been present for so long, and I'd love to see it finally addressed by someone - I'd had my hopes set on 8.3 killing it, but apparently it doesn't.

okay...here's hoping that lightwave 9.0 on the mac has a re written open gl driver,
looks to me that lightwave 8.0 is destined not to happen for modeler...

i'll email newtek europe and see if i can get a lightwave 7.5 code for my new lightwave 8.0 on mac...would then at least get me into modeler...and whilst i'm asking i'll ask for a free lightwave shirt for the hoops i've been jumping thru!

Here's a funny one. Select some points on your model, then zoom into the inside of your model while in shaded mode and you will see those selected points.

I am know programmer, but it seems like they are displaying the Point Normals in the opposite direction.

I made that suggestion about a year ago...but like I said, I am no programmer, so I am sure it was just read as crazy talk. :p

I have found a bug when loading an object. I get weird error "Error reading blablabla file". It seems LW 8.3 has problems reading curves that were imported into LW from dxf.

Here's a buggy file if anyone cares to try it. (http://www.vizualizacije.com/beta_testing/test.lwo)

It loads fine in 8.2.1

what exactlly has been improved on vectorblur, as i have terrible problems with it and it doesnīt seem to be usable still with the new version. here a few pics I rendered of the RC_Helicopter scene from the classic content.

first is straight LW motionblur, not pretty but usable
Http://www.mr-wyatt.com/files/BlurLW.jpg
second is LW motionblur combined with vectorblur
Http://www.mr-wyatt.com/files/BlurLWandVBlur.jpg
third is vectorblur only
Http://www.mr-wyatt.com/files/Blur_VBlur.jpg
as you can see all gets messed up even the antialiased edges of the groundplane get messed up. if thats an improvement then it isnīt obvious to me

I have 8.01 on another machine and your object loads fine, but not in 8.3. Was the LWO created from the DXF import in 8.21? If so, there may be a discrepancy between 8.3 and pre 8.3 lw objects when dealing with curves??? Have you tried created it from scratch in 8.3?

Thanks Newtek for the updates and 150+ bug fixes; especially the PSD, EPSF and hypervoxel stuff. :)

Looking forward to 8.31 :p

Maybe reading the manual will help :) :) :)

"...If the motion blur artifacts become visible in the final animation, you can work
around the problem by rendering the animation in layers and compositing it later
in LightWave or a third party compositing program such as Adobe After Effects. A
simple example would be an aircraft flying past a static background. The
background element and the aircraft could be rendered separately and then
composited to produce the final animation. Each layer should be rendered
against a black background to avoid edge artifacts in the final composited
animation..."

Yea no kidding, sure would be cool if this worked.

gordonrobb and Tim Parsons,
Please visit the LightWave Downloads page at http://www.lightwave3d.com/downloads. You should see a download link for an LScript called Delete Layer. This should address your problem.

Is there any estimate on when the Scene Editor will finally be stable?
I had another nasty Layout crash today on an important project when opening Scene Editor. This within half an hour of first opening a brand new installed 8.3, without any plugins running whatsoever. Now, this is a well known stability issue ever since the new scene editor was made. I am wondering if it received any attention at all?

And thank god for the hub that keeps resetting the options to never autosave the project. This means starting from scratch once more.

Found this, but can't work out what to do with it. Any help? Did you find what to do Tim?

Sorry, got it figured. Replaced the DeleteLayer.lsc with the new one. It crashed the first couple of times I used it but I will try it out and see.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

As a positive:
"Some LW Objects are out of date. Save all objects as well?"

Brilliant.

GRRRRRR!!!! Is the Scene Editor still unstable? ****it, I really hoped that it would be a bit more solid in this update after having read that some work was done on it. The new Scene Editor/Dope Sheet is by far the most exciting feature of LW8 to me, but sheeesh, it would be nice if it were more stable.

8.3 does seem nice with it's huge list of bug fixes, and I'm sure we'll eventually see these longstanding bugs (ie: Scene Editor, Mac OGL issues, etc...) get worked out - hopefully sooner rather than later. :)

"LW 8.3 has multi-core CPU support"
Does this include ALL of layout? Interactive previews, bones, IK, Viper etc?
Will I now get GREATLY improved character interaction on a quad CPU machine?
Or only the renderer...

No points visible in the perspective view here either, running on a Mac so sad that I even upgraded now :-)
Surely these guys at Newtek at least try out the software with a couple of systems?

Seems not

Whats the worth of solving bugs at the expense of being able to model.
