Hi,
I'm new to lightwave. Is it possible to use an exported file from Autodesk Inventor (.dxf format) and import it into Lightwave? If not is there a file format that will work?

Yes, it is possible to import .dxf, but only 2D and only version 14 or lower (or even v12... don't remember).

If you have to import 3D use .3ds file format.

Lightwave will import 3d dxf files. The problem has to do with the data inside the dxf file itself. Most cad programs generate dxf files using splines. Modeling programs generate dxf files using 3dfaces. Check out flay.com for a plugin for importing cad dxf files. Doing a search for dxf will result in what you need. the second and third seam to work pretty good. I think dstorm is better. But then I have not done too much experimenting with the plugins.
