I am a LW newbie who needs to create a 3D topo map of Ft. Benning, Gerogia. What is the best way to go about this? I have been told about DEMs available through the USGS website. Still trying to sort that out. thanks for your advice.

Thanks for the info. This link is of limited help because I am MAC based. Keep those suggestions coming.

If you can get a hold of a PC to convert the dted data go to this link
http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem.htm, convert the SRTM dted you can get through the NASA home page, I think you can get .dt2 from there for the US. COnvert the SRTM to dted and save as a .obj, less poly's then the .dxf method. You should then be able to load it into the Mac.

Your biggest problem ios that Macs just aren't used for GIS. If you have a real urgent need and can give me the coords of FB, I could see if I have the dted here and convert it to a grey scale that you could use as a bump map. As this would be smaller then a mesh.

OK. I will try this process. But first can someone define a few terms:

dted
SRTM
GIS (global info system?)

thanks

DTED - Digital Terrain Elevation Data this is used to make a DEM - Digital elevation model

SRTM - Shuttle Radar Terrain Mapping, it was the sensor used by the shuttle to generate the DTED.

GIS - Geospatial Information Systems, basically software applications that allow you to process data like shape files, dems, vector mapping data and remote sensing data.
