hi im just wondering if theres some way of caching the lighting attributes of a scene without baking the objects within the scene...i have some ferociously complex scenes to render but the lighting doesnt change at all and im thinking that all that frame by frame recomputation is an incredible waste of time...... any sujestions?

Are you talking about lights, or the shadows that they cast? If you're using shadow maps you can cache them, and if it's raytraced shadows you can render a still of the shadows on the ground plane from straight above, apply that image as a map onto the ground and exclude it from recieving ray-trace shadows. With this technique, you can use radiosity and area lights for really nice shadows, and only render one frame of it.

If you can give more specifics about the scene we could probably give you more tips ~
