View Full Version : Shodows on invisible objects?

My apologies to whoever answered this question for me recently, but I can't for the life of me locate the thread (if it's even on this forum :D).

I want to cast a shadow onto a ground plane, but I don't want the ground plane to render, just the shadow. (And the object casting the shadow maybe, but not necessarily.) How can I do this?

For the gound plane in the Surface Editor in the Advanced tab set Alpha Channel to Shadow Density.

Also make sure in properties for the invisible object, in the Render tab that the Alpha channel is set to Use Surface settings (it usually is by default).

Render to a codec that supports alpha.

The alpha channel will contain only the shadow from the ground plane and any other objects, of course.

There may be a way to exclude the ground plane from the visible channels but I haven't figured out how to do it without losing the shadow. So you'll have to combine the visible channels and the alpha channel to get the desired result.
