View Full Version : VNC and "headless" Macs

Anyone here with experience doing screamernet with headless (no monitor connected) Macs via VNC?

I've been doing a little reading and it seems there's a problem getting a Mac to respond when it has no monitor. I'm looking to set up a group of Mac Minis to do screamernetting, but if I have to have monitors for each one, even cheap ones, it's out of my budget.

Can't see that being a problem. I've got VNC installed here on a few Macs and a PC and it all works fine. Ran a headless OS9 server for years that way.
Of course, the faster your network, the better response you will get in VNC.

There's also a handy utility "WakeOnLan" (http://homepage.mac.com/dtl/FileSharing38.html), that lets you put your Macs to sleep and wake up from a remote machine so you can put all those mini's to sleep when not using them if you want.

Maybe a silly question but what is VNC?

You coulnd't have it better explained : http://www.realvnc.com/what.html

There's serveral different implementations around, and I believe Apple's Remote Desktop is compatible with it as well.
