View Full Version : Skytracer slows to a crawl with big bakes

Hi All,

I'm trying to bake some decent resolution skytracer skies, but I'm hitting an odd problem.

A test at low resolution runs nice and fast, but larger resolutions run away in render time at an insane rate! For example, 512 square takes a few minutes, but 2000 square had only made it to a few percent after 6 hours!

I'm not changing anything other than the resolution, so what's going on?

I have 500 Mb of memory, and it's not like the hard drive is rattling away...

Alternatively, anyone know a source of pre baked ones for download?!

Cheers,
Nick

Well, the problem seems to be related to the fact that SKT will try to calculate all maps in one run. This dramatically increases render times especially since it is volumetric. I always prefer to do it manually with a custom camera - this requires some tweaking on the edges but it's nothing that bothers me too much. Alternatively you can always buy Ozone - it's much faster, looks a lot better and has tons of presets.

Thanks for the suggestion - I took a look at Ozone. It looks nice, but is outside my budget as an amateur.

I'll try the camera angles, as you suggest.

Cheers,
Nick

Make sure you don't have antialiasing on - you'll be waiting 'til Christmas...
