Well, most of the credit for this belongs with Bjorn Jonnson, who did the maps I am using.

Anyone who likes space stuff is strongly recommended to visit his planetary maps pages, these were done using the latest Cassini based maps, including the colour map for the rings. Check his links too if you are into this stuff.

Anyhow, on with the images!

you know that the latest pictures show that saturn is actually blue. ;)

nice images.

Interesting article! Though it didn't say saturn was blue all over, just the tip of the northern hemisphere, I never knew it had any blue at all.

Nice renders, Starbase. Personally I'd like to see one from inside a ring, with all the rocks and ice particles and whatnot... always thought those were cool images.

Well, I am not sure how I could blend a swarm of rocks and ice with those flat rings... I agree it would look good if done correctly though.

There IS some blue there - look at the limb and I have added a scattering atmospere which gives a slightly darker and bluer edge to the planet.

But don't beleive everything NASA says, their fondness for false colour stuff makes me very dubious!

There's actually a HUGE amount of detail hidden in the ring imagery, but the anti aliasing and sampling down from 2400x1800 removed the fine structure.
