Iíve been reading about the Cell processors in the new PS3 and all the numbers look very impressive.

Iíd be surprised if you couldnít link it up to a network and as itís been designed to handle lots of 3D calculations very fast - Would it not be an asset to program an app that could use this power to render 3D scenes?
Lots of games companies will have them in house to test their games. Lots of freelance users will be able to afford one at some point. Even students will have them if they donít spend money of beer for two weeks!.

It would be one extra thing to have over the other 3D products and further Lightwave and prove Newtek to still be more innovative than the other companies.

just a pipe dream - must get back to work or read some other websites :)

It shouldn't be too hard to get it running. The Cell is PowerPC, and Lightwave already runs on it (Mac). The question is how hard it will be to get it running good. ;) The Cell will be a bastard to code for.

Consoles are usually quite limited in memory terms as well...

IMHO, pointless..... with hardware prices dropping every day it realy makes no sense (no financially sound sense anyway) to code something as irrelevant as LW or LWSN port to PS3...

To put it simple: studios who need render farms don't need Playstations, and home users who may have playstations don't need render farms.
And if they do, much better solution is to invest in "regular" PC/Mac hardware.

Fair Point.
Lack of on board memory will mar potential.

If It has a local HDD then that could be used or even burning assets to a CD might work.
And if the PS3 is half as fast as they say then Iíd be happy for it to hit my network at night. Seems a shame not to put the power to task.
