View Full Version : Advice on building a futuristic city (buildings & architecture)

I have a couple of questions in regards to using 'Lightwave 7.5' for modelling a city and buildings:

- Which is the best and most efficient way of creating buildings and cityscapes? Should I make drawings first in order to have some sort of an idea?

- What other advice could I have in regards to using Lightwave 7.5 and Modeler 7.5? I would have to use Modeler in order to create all of my objects.

BTW: I am just a beginner in using Lightwave and Modeler and am still learning the mechanics of what everything does (this project sounds pretty daunting :eek:). This is for my video class.

The approach with vary depending on what you need it for. If it's a 3 second fly through or a still image.

I'd recommmend refining your ideas down as much as possible on paper. Don't get bogged down in building detail that never gets seen. Setting up your shot using blocked out primitives can also help to scope out the general layout/camera position etc and gives you a clear idea of what's in frame.

Managing textures is also a big job. I quite like the idea of using background mattes and hand painting some detail on the final render.

I am (in the works) creating a short animated movie in Lightwave. The thing is that the majority of it is of viewing the cityscape.

I'd do concept art to get your ideas down on paper, storyboard it with consideration for camera moves etc, and then start animating with blocked out primitives. Once you've got that down it's just a matter of replacing the primitive objects with the detailed versions.

if you are not already using or are aware of it,

i have found the "citygen.lsc" plugin from Eki's plugpak
to be a great, easy and fast way to get started on something like this.

and really any other kind of city type project.

Okay, so the important thing first is to have concept drawings of how I want the city and buildings to look like. Also, to have drawings of how I want the camera angles to be (storyboarding).

If your reason for doing this is to learn more about modeling, and its purely non commercial, it might be an idea to look at the work of Sci Fi artists- maybe even try to recreate some of their designs in 3D.

I find if I do my own concept drawing, I'll tend to draw what I know I can build- which is good most of the time- but you may learn more trying to recreate a concept done by someone else.

You should look at the dystopia city blocks, they're great to learn from and not all of them cost money. You can download some of the city blocks for free here (http://www.axeman3d.com/models7.htm) as long as you don't use them for direct commercial purposes... so download, study and learn!
