Hi,

I'm upgrading from LW V5.5 to LW V8.2. Under V5.5 I've been
importing DXF files produced by a third-party product, and it
works just fine. However, under LW V8.2, this importing stopped
working.

When I select Load Object in Modeler, select the DXF file and
press OK, the name of the DXF file appears in the "object name"
field in the upper right, but no points/polys are loaded. I saw the
thread on scaling down the object, but the Statistics page says
there are 0 points and 0 polygons in the layer.

Modeler also crashes on exit when I've done this import. I can
include the ACCVIO info if anyone thinks it's important.

As I said, the V5.5 Modeler imports them just fine, so I'm confused
as to why V8.2 won't. I've attached a TinySquare.DXF sample,
renamed to .TXT accomodate the forum's Attachment Manager.

Thanks for any help,
mTp

In this case Lightwave is not at fault. I tried this dxf file in Bryce, CorelDraw 12, Lightwave 8.2, and Turbocad 10. None were able to display an object. In turbocad I had it tell me errors and it said AcDbPolyFaceMesh(20). An invalid Polyface Mesh has no valid faces was found. Validation: Invalid. Replaced by Remove.
39 objects audited
Somethings to try:
1) export as 3ds.
2) Change the version of dxf usually lower like autocad r11 keep reducing the version until it works.
3) purchase a program that can convert between your program and 3ds,dxf, or lwo file formats
4) export a front and side view of your object as eps or ai and recreate the object in Lightwave.
5) hope and pray some one else can give better advise. ;)
Good luck

Ooops...trying to reduce the file size I set the
bounding box for the export too small, only
surrounding two points! Could you please try
the new file attached in your various tools
and let me know if it still fails?

Thanks,

Now I was able to import the dxf into Bryce resave the dxf and load into Lightwave. Here is the resulting lwo file, except I rotated and dropped to floor.
I also included the new dxf for you to try.

So, I guess if Bryce can read the original DXF
file, it's a "valid" DXF file and I should submit
a bug report? Since LW V5.5 can read these
DXF files just fine, and LW V8.2 cannot, seems
like a bug/regression to me.

Of course, I can keep the V5.5 Modeler around
to do the conversion, but it seems like the
LW DXF importer should read these files.

I found a plug in for lightwave that will read your dxf file. You will find it on dstorms web site at http://www.dstorm.co.jp/english/plugin/object.htm#DXFImport

By the way, the problem has to do with cad programs using polylines in the dxf file while Lightwave and most other 3d modeling programs use 3dfaces in the dxf file. Both Bryce and Vue can read both. But Bryce exports 3dfaces and I don't know about vue as the version I have can not export objects.
Open both dxf files and compare them with a text editor.
