View Full Version : how to stencil text into an object

Hi all,

I'm working on a little texturing/modeling exercise using the attached photo as reference. I'm getting particularly hung up on stenciling the text into the bottom of the shell casing. Here's what I did:

1. I froze the bullet so I wouldnt have to worry about n-gons clean up after the stencil operation.

2. I created my text in a second layer and curved it using the Bend tool.

3. I used drill/stencil and assigned a new surface to the result.

4. I smooth shifted and then moved the new text surface inwards a few mm.


I'm not really impressed with how the texts turned out (see attached render). The edges seem too hard. I guess I'm looking for a something closer to the reference image--softer edges I guess.

Is this kind of task better achieved with a bump map or even a displacement map? Or is modifying geometry the way to go. If the latter, can you experts provide some opinions on how to accomplish this better???? :D :D

You could try it using a bump map. Just try it and see the effects of it.

Hollow points, eh? Hmmmm.

I think they look great as they are.
