Something that will make skinning bodies and faces a bit easier?

Kanephan,

Can't think of any off-hand, but you might try searching the Plug_Ins database over at http://www.flay.com

Is there a particular portion of the process you're having trouble with?

What are you having trouble with?

8.2 gains all the features that I loved about UV Edit Pro but is much easier to use and works right in the viewport.

Well I'm a beginner, and I'm making a simple body (about 3500 polys). And I'm trying to skin it the only way I know how, being the atlas UV mode. Problem is I end up with this:

I mean... I don't really know what to do with this. I guess I could manage the way it is but...it's clearly a mess.

Another question, that I kind of feel stupid asking...

What's the "right" way to make a texture? What I do is make an atlas UV map, and then make one of the viewports "UV Texture", make it really big, print screen, crop, and work with it in photoshop.

Is that what everyone does?

If only cylindrical uv maps would align correctly. How?

Rotate the object 45 degrees on the heading (or is it 90? Can never remember :)) before you unwrap it then just rotate it back...

*EDIT* OK, it's 90 degrees (facing right) - just checked :D

CB... Rotate it 90 and apply the uv, then rotate it back.

Tess... that plugin does rock, but that is not what is going to solve his problem atm. :)

Kanephan... that is not how you unwrap a model. Atlas UV is almost always not the way to do it if you are going to be hand painting the textures. As proton said, there isn't a real need for it now with LW 8.2. What you need is a good tutorial/explanation/book... there are quite a bit all over the net. :)

Oh well I'm stuck with lightwave 7 for a variety of reasons. So you're saying I need to find a tutorial?

On a side note, my bump map isn't rendering  in the surface editor preview window, its quite bumpy. Then I render and nothing.

Here's a shot:
