i have a scene which im using for an animation that has large glass windows on the walls, and a glass box inside. when i turn reflection on, it gives me the look i want, reflecting the surrounding and such, but it added 3 minutes to my render times for a 4 minute total render. when i turn off ray trace reflections and keep shaddows, the scene renders in about a minute.

Does anyone know of a way to get that refelction effect more efficiently? any tips would be great.

thanks,
sean

Set Ray Recursion Limit to 4. That might help :)

give your glass surface a reflection map of a suitable image and kill reflection properties in your surface style.

Killing your rendering times? 4 minutes? Oh, boy. Wait till you will be rendering really reflective scenes. As soon as you passed the 48h barrier you'll gonna lick all your fingers if you could get back to those 4 minutes.

Make sure if you are working with air-glass and glass-air surfaces that the inside polys don't reflect. That really kills the render engine.
