I made some initial tests and comparisons with the new renderer's settings v. the old settings using some of the original benchmark scenes at Splinecage.

something which will be cool,

because the filters happens after the rendering pass are finished,

it would be nice that at the end of a render, before applying the filter, it shows you the picture and give you the option to preview the image with
different filter.

this way you can choose which one is best very quickly.

@cresshead

Use Flashget or some other Download Manager to DL, so no problems with DL.

Ok for all of you unable to DL 8.2 or if you've got more of a life then me and don't want to sit around and do test renders, here are my test renders by which I made my comments so far on Splinecage (http://www.splinecage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=866&page=1&pp=10):

Hi Zarathustra,

Could you do us lesser beings (windows users) a favor, and ad the extinson to the files that you uploaded, as mickysoff cant read or refuses to read the info that the Mac writes to the private chunk of a file which identifies it as a particular format.

Thanks,
Dan

Hey Zarathustra-

Couldn't open the files either... Is it me?

(Mac 10.3.7; DP 1.42/G4)

Thanks

-Dave

PS - Have you had any problems with tiff images?

They are 24bit targas.

For the Mac guys, Preview will open them. I can just double click them and they open on my desktop with Preview. That error message is prompting you to choose Preview.

For the PC guys, sorry, I guess you'll have to "Load as" and choose "Targa". I think that's how it's done over on the dark side, right? It's been a LONG time since I dealt with issues like that. The extra time won't kill ya. It's not like you're sitting around making render tests :D

Nope... that didn't work either. I also tried to open them in Photoshop, and set the file type to targa... but they're still grey...

My Mac won't open them either, even after choosing Preview as the preferred application from the list. Same for Photoshop CS. You're going to have to give them extensions or else they won't be readable to anyone.

To those trying to open these files,
Just ad the extension .tga, that should make them readable on any machine, also I prefer PNG's higher compatibility, much smaller file size and the compression is lossless so the quality is the same.

Welcome to the 21st Century,
Dan

I guess when zipping if there's no extension the files get screwed.

Ok, I updated the archive and it should work now. Same link as before.

Got 'em... opened fine.
Thanks for taking the time to put this out.

Is the core LW renderer any faster at all?
If you render a scene in 8.0.1 and the same scene with the same "Classic" AA settings in 8.2, is there any speed change?

So far, no.

Well, the new renderer is good with teapots! Seriously, I've tried the DOF.lws and the Teapot.lws.

I am a bit underwhelmed by my PLD tests today. Cool but could be cooler. Hopefully, Fprime will wow us all.

It is so awesome Subds don't distort UVs anymore. Believe me, I won't take that for granted for at least a week...

Is it just me or does radiosity look much cleaner now? It doesn't seem much faster, but looks very nice - the attached was 640x480, single bounce, backdrop only with 4x12 Rays per Evaluation. Shading noise reduction is enabled - total render time about 27 minutes... Oh yeah - PLD 5 pass, with Box (Sharp) reconstruction filter.

we've done some initial tests, mostly to do with what we're using lw for right at the moment, and i must say, its looking good.
not so much for final renders, although bumping up the pld will probably sort that out.

for some stuff we used to used to render out at low enhanced or no aa, but with soft turned on.
with the pld-2, and anything like box [soft] or guassian [sharp] with soft turned on we get 'as good as' results in a quarter of the time.
at d1, throwing it around say on tv or video, it works very well..

and deefinately makes an improvement on our rendering times if we want to use motion blur..

all good imo!

In order to come to terms with this new renderer, I think we all have to either use default scenes for our comments or post the scenes we're using, post renders, details, etc. Claiming this or that is faster really isn't informative.

I've added more tests at Splinecage (http://www.splinecage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=866&page=2&pp=10) including quick tests with "Variations" and more detailed with Tracer_No_Radiosity and Radiosity Box. Also, I did my own tests using the Shuttle scene used in the NT Ad (http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/downloads/updates/lw82/support/features.html#aa) under the same scene settings and, well, my results differ a tad.
