Has anyone stumbled on the supreme 3D text modelling treastise and/or tutorial. Not your old run of the mill import eps, bevel, bevel. Those are a dime a dozen and your left with a face poly thats comprised of many points (and flat and boring). Tripling it yields some ungraceful geometry. More like rounded text. Probably where you build sections of each character with spline patches for a more realistic sculpture like text (think panic room or Lord of the Rings.) If searched pretty far and wide and have never seen a tutorial like this.

I really can't follow what you're asking. What do you mean by "think panic room or Lord of the rings"?

Basically, the way you've find repeatedly is so often repeated because that's essentially all there is to it.
You could do things differently by maybe by making the text out of quads first, which would let you then subpatch it and then you'd smoothshift rather then bevel and then maybe alter the subpatch weight for crisper edges.
