Yes, I did a search and that only clouded the issue...

So, which video card? At work I use the stock card. It sucks but I can work with it. If I throw the money at any of the more expensive cards am I asking for trouble? I saw a few posts about the ULTRA card being problematic - what about the GT?

TIA

These days there seems to be problems with nVdia cards, I have a G5 with an ATI and have no problems, but in the past ATI has had serious problems while nVidia was flawless - I prefer nVidia but if you're concerned about issues 'right now' I'd go with ATi... what's your stock card that sucks so bad?

I just bought a 6800GT for my G5 and love it... the 10.3.7 update apparently added a lot of new OpenGL features for that board, so let's hope the next rev of Lightwave takes advantage of a few of them.

That's good to know. I ordered one today without a graphics card upgrade... I figured I can always do it later - downside is that I'll have the stock card collecting dust on a shelf. What prompted you to purchase the GT is lieu of the ULTRA? Thanks for the help.

I heard that Apple was having heat issues with the Ultras, so they created the GT at a slightly slower clock speed - 50Mhz. It's otherwise exactly the same card an with performance almost on par with the Ultra.

Serves me right for being one of the first to order something. At my age I should know better.

Yeah, I saw your post and decided to wait on the graphics card until the kinks are worked out. The longer I wait the cheaper the cards should get. :)

Nvidia make great cards, the 6800 series are very nice... but they cannot write Mac drivers, for some reason.

It's very odd, I think. Nvidia generally have the better Linux and BSD drivers, right? I seem to remember seeing a lot of angry nerds pestering ATI about their poor support. Nvidia have the better OpenGL drivers, right? In game tests and the like, Nvidia usually takes the performance crown in OpenGL games and ATI in the Direct3D games. Macs use only OpenGL (and QuickDraw 3D, I guess), and it a BSD system, sort of.

So why are their Mac drivers of such low quality, compared to ATI's?

This is the only time I've seen ATi act better than nVidia - every manufacturer has it's bad days, I'll bet it's just temporary.

Well, we're going to have a new option, the Radeon X800. (http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/01/05/x800/index.php?lsrc=mcrss-0105)

"Teh roxx0r," in the parlance of our time. ;)

Seriously though, that's great news. They demoed it a while back, so I was wondering when we would actually see it released. It is, most likely, a better choice than any Nvidia card.

Edited to add:

Barefeats has posted a few tests with the X800 (http://www.barefeats.com/radx800.html). Only non-game is Motion (render RAM preview), unfortunately, but look at the FSAA test in Halo! Holy hell! Twice as fast as the 6800!

Glad I waited... Thanks for the info!
