There used to be one in NH a few years ago but the few studios that were in NH are either gone or have switched platforms. I heard there was one in Boston but I haven't seen much info.

There used to be a Boston users group at Northeastern once a month or so (I lived there for 7 years until last week) but it fizzled out a while back. I know the MFA school has a Ligthwave class, you might find some leads there.

I dont think the MFA has any lightwave classes anymore. every now and then
i check the local schools in and around the Boston/Mass area and so far i havent
found anything. Maya, sure. Max yep, but no Lightwave.

hopefully I'm wrong though! if so please gimme more info :-)

If there was a local users group I could get to easily via mbta, i'd probably
go (depending on the times, work, etc...)

Weekends are best for me too. Is it just me and you koots :) or are other people interested. We need a place to meet. And a plan of course :) Maybe we could all just get together first to meet each other and then plan a course of action, or whatever :D

I'm having an idea... :) it's just an idea. I'm currently enrolled at McIntosh College in Dover NH (graphic design). This would probably be quite a drive for most - not sure. But it is a place to do this thing - I was thinking I could ask the powers that be if they would permit somehing like this and we could also open it up to interested students. Not sure of the logistics of this but it's a suggestion.

hmmm... Dover looks a little far for most of you.

Enjoy

We had a get together going once a month in the Lowell/Nashua area with a half dozen people, but it petered out due to families, considerable work projects, and other distractions. I hadn't planned any new get togethers, as no one has started bugging me again this year.

Given that people are from "all over", a good centralized meeting place would be good. If interested, I'll be happy to inquire as to whether I can get access to the Cisco Systems customer education center once a month (weeknight or weekend), or at least one of the larger conference rooms. Good size conference/demo rooms, lots of AV gear, etc. Its located on their 300 acre campus in Boxboro, MA, which is just off of 495, one exit south of Route 2, and about 10 minutes north of the intersection of I495 and I290 out of Worcester.

Still working the issue internally. In the time since I wrote the original message suggesting the possibility, I've gone through about a half dozen people. Apparently, its a pretty new kind of request for the campus, and the "canned answer" hasn't gotten around yet. I'm hoping to have a solid "Yes" or "No" by the end of the week, and the thread will know shortly after I do. Cross your fingers, as we have some pretty good facilities here for this kind of thing.

Hello,

Maybe its just me, but I would think that this Thread would stand a better chance of recruitment if it were removed from the "LW-Community" board and perhaps placed within, who knows, maybe the "LW-UserGroup" board..? I've been scanning the UserGroups board for sometime now and I didn't know anything about this Thread until I just happened upon it while screwing around to see what people may have been posting within the Community & ect...

Well I guess its a good time to have a new New England Lightwave user group. I have secured a space and time courtesy of Blaine Holm of Video Hardware Services.

When: Tuesday Feb. 15th 7pm-9:30pm

Where: Video Hardware Services 250 Commercial St. Suite 4011 Manchester, NH

I will re-post this in the user group forum.

I will post again soon with more details.

Nothin fancy, just an informal get together of LW folk. Video Hardware Services is the place, you can get directions here:

http://www.videohardware.com/html/directions.html

There will be a xeon with 8.2 and a projector for sharing LW knowledge and don't forget to bring examples of your latest LW creations.

See you there!

Video Hardware has been nice enough to host this event and is an authorized Newtek Dealer check out the website.

It looks like it may have petered out again.

However, if you're interested (I'm down in Dracut), I'm aware of another lightwave user, and I have a nice 60" LCD projection TV with a DVI-D port for hooking the PC in.

While we're all shuffling around for a venue, one of the things that have killed UGs in the past is a lack of content to draw individuals to the meeting.

To make one fly well, I think we need to be looking at/scheduling content as far in the future as possible. Optimally, I'd like to see two hours of presentation per gathering for at least 4-6 meetings out. Whether this is individual work, or we ask various vendors/professionals to come in to do a presentation.

An alternative format would be that _everyone_ has to bring _something_ after their first meeting, and we do a round table format, discussing the work, improvement possibilties, tricks, etc.

Thoughts?

I'm up for a LWUG regardless of the location, but boston/cambridge would be ideal for me.

I'm rather new to LW and won't have anything ground-shattering to show off, but I would be more than happy to show some current projects I'm working on, and bat some ideas around with others. Also would be most interested in seeing others work and discussing it.

I'm not in the industry so I really don't have ideas/contacts for having some pros come in, though it would be great if we could make it happen.

Unfortunately I don't have a good place to host...

Ok... Slow progress is being made on my ability to get a space. The major upside is that its on 495 (Route 111, in Boxboro), just north of the pike, making it about an hour to many major points in New England.

The downside is that its not in Boston (although the commuter rail does come
out to Acton, and there is always carpooling).

The other nice feature is that we should be able to get quite comfortable facilities.

However, I'm being asked for a rough headcount of the number that would possibly attend. I'm going with "about a dozen" at the moment, but don't want to grossly underestimate.

Thoughts? Worth pursuing?

Ok. I've got a tentative space commitment for at least one meeting at the Cisco Systems campus in Boxboro. If things go well, I can probably arrange up to quarterly meetings at the facility.

As they have nothing really to do with Lightwave, they've asked a few things...

1.) That we provide a rough headcount before we schedule the day (they want an idea of what they're committing to).
2.) That we leave the space we use the same or in better shape than we find it. It will probably be in one of their customer presentation spaces, and obviously these are used during the week for business.
3.) That we adhere to all of their security rules, which, for us, will mean being escorted in the secure spaces (if any), no network hacking, etc. In other words, we're guests.
4.) That we conduct ourselves in an appropriate and professional manner while at the facility.

I would also like to present an agenda for the day, which will give a more professional appearance than "just a group of people getting together and hanging out". It will also give them an idea of how long we'll be in the building.

Thoughts?

omg! I was just thinking today on my walk to work that it was a shame there was no user group around me. I live in Arlington and work in Cambridge and would like to join in.

Just wanted to be counted mainly, but if venue is a problem the public libraries usually have rooms that can be booked as long as the event is not exclusive to the public. At least that's the Cambridge library policy. As long as someone has a portable projector that could work.

As far as presentations...well I just started working on stuff so I wouldn't know anything special. However, people can maybe show WIP and get C&C? Kind of like a writing group that peer reviews?

05-08-2006, 03:29 PM
Not yet. I'm watching and waiting for critical mass before I put my hat in my hands and ask Cisco to commit the space.

What I've learned from running another LUG is that people are willing to show up and listen, but very few are willing to step up to provide content for said lectures, or even do the leg work to try to find people to come in and speak (I've found many people are willing, if asked...).

I'm hoping to build a core group of 3-5 people who are willing to share the workload and be able to put together quarterly or monthly discussions.

Short of that, a LUG won't last 6 months (the total amount of content I think I could present).

Otherwise, if 3-4 people just want to get together irregularly a few times a year to shoot the excrement, you're better off in someone's living room, and ordering pizza.

I typically use cable management solutions (e.g. Panduit) for heavy cable runs. Of course, when I set up, I tend to use heavier, workshop type benches and 19" 4-post racks for all the PC equipment, and the panduit screws on with self-tapping screws (and the occational pilot hole).

I do have to ask, on the screen in one of the shots... Can it be lit for chroma-key effects (is my spelling off? Its been a _long_ day, and it looks wrong :screwy: ), and if so, where'd you pick it up? I'm going to be looking for something similar to do one or two of my basement walls with to give me some space for such an effect.
