View Full Version : Copy/Paste UVs?

I'm building a shrimp-like creature that has 11 segments. The project was started in another package, but moved to Lightwave because I like it more ;-). The segments are all distorted copies of the first one, but they've been through so many translations and culls that I haven't the faintest idea whether they all have the same point-order anymore. I've made a nice UV map for the first segment and I'd like to be able to use it for the rest of the 11. Is this possible? Is there anything I have to check on before I try it? Anything I can do to increase the odds of its working?

OK, I've used UVReknitter and found that I can, in fact morph between the segments (using BkgToMorph) after using it. That means that in theory, I ought to be able to apply the same UV map to all of them, but I can't figure out how to do it! Any advice will be much appreciated.....

OK. After even NewTek technical support said it probably couldn't be done...I've figured out a workaround. It's a kludge, but some of you might find it useful at some point....

After using UVReknitter to make absolutely certain that all my segments were duplicates of one another, what I'm going to do (note future tense, I haven't done it to the main model yet, but testing has shown it will work...)I can load my main segment, call it Segment 1 (the one with the clean UVMap), and put Segment 2 in the background. Then I can apply Map>Morph>Morph to Bkg to , in effect, create a duplicate of Segment 2. I use File> "Save Layers as Object" to save a copy of Segment 1, now in the shape and position of Segment 2. (You see where I'm going with this...)
In Layout, I load the saved version of Segment 1, apply Morph Mixer, and apply the "Segment 2" morph to it at 100%. I can then "Save Transformed Object", giving me a copy of Segment 2, but with the nice, clean, and very dense UVMap from Segment 1 also applied to it.

As I said, a bit of a kludge, but still faster than making 11 high-density UVMaps. If anyone knows of a better way to do this, I'm going to take a break for a little while before starting, and I'd love to hear of a simpler, faster solution.

very good solution. You learn fast, coming from another program :-)

however, just as you thought : when you can morph objects, you can also transfer the UV's. Donno why newtek would say it can't be done, they must have misunderstood your problem.

There are copy/paste uv's tools, either they come with LW8 or you have to do a little search on Flay.com or you could use use UVedit Pro which all the segments in one layer.

If all your parts have the same point number you can use uv copy.
Lasso select your UV maped part, use uv copy then lasso select one of the part that is not maped and use uv past.
You will need to uv rotate or uv flip some poly if the order point isn't the same.
You need to select poly in the same order too, that's why I use the lasso selection.

UV copy/past/rotate/mirror are from UVEdit.p plugin from DStorm. I think it has been integrated in LW 8.

Ah! Just another reason to upgrade! I'm using 7.5d....

Just one little thing...
Befor you copy/past uv make sure you unweld evry thing ;)

With the new LW 8.2 update you sould be able to do it without unwelding.
We need to wait some more... :o

By the way, UVEdit is a free plug-in and it works even on lw 7.X :D

it's japanese, that's why I'm posting the google translation...is a plug that will copy an uv map (or any other map, morph, weight, etc) to another object even with a different point count. You have to play with the settings to get the best out of it. I've managed to copy the uvmap from a cube to a ball....with errors of course, but it works.

I've opened this thread about these plugins.

pBarrelas, acho que nunca te tinha visto por aqui...é bom ir vendo uns tugas a mexer no lightwave...e às 5 da manhã??! isso é que é vontade.
