For your question about learning resources, you can see a list I just posted here http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?t=31303

As to your question about if LightWave is useful for film work, LightWave has been used in a number of film projects (and a number of non-film projects). You can see a list at www.lightwave3d.com/projects

Theres a lot of tutorials out there on newteks site and other places such as Scott Camerons site: http://members.shaw.ca/lightwavetutorials/Main_Menu.htm
and www.flay.com.
I also have about 4 hours of free videos on my site or over at the KURV site. Sometimes its hard to try and figure out the software based on separate tutorials here and there. That being the case I also have a an Intro to Lightwave course that will get you up and running quickly. It covers the basics and rapidly gets into more advanced topics. Its over 35 hours of quicktime movies plus unlimted online support on my student forums.
It covers modeling, texturing, lighting, rigging, particles/fx, animation and more.
You can check out the course here:
and my forums here:

Theres another tutorial at KURV called Product Creation which is a 3 hour video that teaches modeling, texturing and lighting. I would check out the support forum on it over at KURV for comments from other students. http://www.kurvstudios.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=27
