I'm fairly new to Lightwave. Using version 7.0. I like the shadows I get with area lights but hate the dark strip of that's thrown out along the polygon edge. This makes the light a real pain on interiors. I wish also I could make the area light one-sided. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

A couple of things:

Area lights don't emit light along the edges - fill in the dark areas with other fill lights.

Make sure you turn on Inverse Squared Falloff - it will make area lights behave in a more realistic manner.

To make them one sided create a polygon the exact same size as an area light, place it just to one side of the light (make sure the polygon is facing in the direction of the light, parent it it the light)

Don't place area lights too close to other surfaces otherwise you see the dark edges you mentioned.

I'm no lighting expert but check this thread out - it may help:
