Hello Everyone .. i have not been using LW long i realy enjoy it , i do have a question though i was told ( cant remember by who ) that graphics req. alot of math knowledge .. to tell you the truth i SUCK at math lol so i am wondering is that true ? .. i will mainly be using LW , and what ever plugins you have for it , will also be using PSP or photoshop other then that , that is it ...

and also if anyone knows of a few good sites for beginner tutorials ?.. that wouyld be very helpful .. i have been following the tutorials on this site get lost a little on the more advanced ones .... looking at the gallery all of your work just pushes me more and more to learn this .... might get to the point i might just change my major in college from Applied Science hehe

Maths, well as far as LW goes, I think you'll only need to start looking at maths when you get to expressions, the basic's in LW are pretty much math free (i'll stand corrected someone let me know if i'm wrong)... Infact, LW is cool enough that if for example you want to rotate something 3 times in the X, but cant work out 360 deg X 3, then simply put in '360 * 3' and it'll automatically work it out for you. This will work in all the input parameters (I think)..

I never went higher than Algebra I in high school, and that was 20 years ago. It's not a factor.

Well, don't completely negate math altogether Matt.

Do you need to use math in your daily use of modeling, texturing, rigging and animating. Thankfully no!

But....

The reason that people tell you that you need to know math to do graphics is because there is a grain of truth in it. You have to understand that the whole concept of a 3D program like lightwvae is based on Math. When you model something in modeler, you are moving points through the cartesian system which is a math concept based on the three axises of X, Y, and Z. Remember plotting points on a graph in algegra in high school? You were essentially using a very primitve form of Lightwave! (although, you would have probably had to take geometry or trig to get into the Z axis) Everything in Layout is based on the cartesian system as well. It's all about plotting and manipulating points in X, Y, and Z space. You don't have to think about it as you're modeling, but I find it helpful to do so.

There are many places that you can use math in Lightwave. richdj already mentioned Expressions. Also, if you want to do any lscript programming, math is good to know, at least from the standpoint of writing working equations and understanding the concept of working with and manipulating numeric values. Hell, you can even put math into your entry boxes in Lightwave. Like if you have a procedural texuture (hmm, a math based texture), and you want to double it in size? Well, you could go into the X, Y, and Z boxes, double their values and enter them in manually. Or you can just add *2 on the end to double the current number. Or you can get more compelx then that. I haven't tried it, but I assume you can use functions like sin and tan there too, as I know you can use them while writing expressions.

People say you don't have to know Math to do 3D art and that's true. But I say it's worth getting your hands a little dirty with some numbers. So if you're question is, can you model a head without knowing what the vector and magnitude of a line are, then yes, most definately. But if you want to push Lightwave as much as possible, you will definately come across some math in your journey.
