I want to project a looped animation as a texture onto one object. Since it is a rotating object i need an alpha channel for this animation too so that the rest of the texture behind is visible. What is the best and easiest way to render an animation with an alpha channel ?

If you are animating and rendering the texture to be used from Lightwave, just save it out as an image sequence in a format that supports alpha channels, like TIF or TGA. Or render out a quicktime movie with millions of colors+ the plus being the alpha channel. Basically same idea if you are using a 2D animation from something like After Effects, Combustion or whatever compositing program you use...save out the animation with an alpha.
