I thought you could save a targa file .tga with an alpha channel embedded, make an instance of this one file in Layout, and use it as an image for surfaces and the alpha for clip map. Instead I am creating a seperate file for the alpha image. Maybe i'm not saving the file type right? Should it be a Tiff instead. My clip maps are almost working with the exption that I have holes around what seem to be hightlight areas.
I dunno!
Should I keep creating two files for one object surface?
i have a lot to create otherwise it wouldn't bother me so much.

In the image editor make 2 instances of the original image+alpha. Set one to be Image only, and use this for your surface, then the other to Alpha only and use that for your clip map.
