Hello Everybody
Yesterday while watching the NAB- stream I saw an interview with Jim Plant, the CEO of NewTek.
He mentioned Lightwave and that there will be something to show off at Siggraph this year.
Well, today there was another interview with him and he confirmed this again (it is not exactly his words, I know, I should have stenoed them, but umpf, was hanging on his lips too much):
Jim Plant said, that they were not showing of LW that much at NAB, because NAB is more related to broadcast than 3d. He went on, that there have been a lot of concerns and rumors going on about LightWave, its future etc in the past year or so, but that Lightwave- users should look forward to Siggraph in San Diego as NewTek will have exciting things to show then regarding LightWave!
So I will take him by his word!
Looking forward to San Diego!
:D

Lamont you are a lucky bastard ;-)
It is (not only) times like these that I wished to be living in the USA.
You know here in Europe we are about as far away from anything interesting in terms of CG as you can get and flights to the USA are very, very expensive. I am still hoping to be able to make it to Siggraph this year, but I have little confidence, well we will see.

I still think there's a situation where we have two concurrent LW developments in place. FWIW, I believe minor work continues on LW as it stands, to support current users (hence 7.5b, which was not a major piece of coding), but the bulk of the work has been on a new LW-compatible application which works natively at 64-bit resolution, ready for OSes from Apple and (eventually) MS.

I understand Newtek has been working closely with Apple engineers recently, and the only reason I could see is to develop on a new OS and new hardware.

Remember how fast NewTek came to OSX - LW was one of the first recognised apps to run on it. The guys at Luxology know that LW is very long in the tooth, and needs to be replaced with a next-generation app. Which is why we haven't seen diddly from them for 18 months.

This would also put LW right at the forefront of the 3D community again, as the only true 64-bit 3D app available. It'll take a while for the other apps to catch up (in fact, 3ds max may not ever, from what I understand of its history and architecture).

I may be utterly wrong, but there are an increasing number of tidbits out there which back up this theory...

I don't think that explains the Newtek / Luxology situation. However it would be great if your 64-bit theory was correct.

It seems more and more likely that Apple will be first to market with a 64-bit machine for the masses. Many are expecting these machines to be in the shops in August. We need to move past the 4GB RAM barrier, and Newtek would get a great marketing coup if Lightwave was running in 64-bit mode on the new IBM processor.

As for Luxology, I'd like to see Jim Plant himself post a message on this forum with the title Newtek and Luxology, and either one of the following messages:

Option 1 Newtek would like to inform everyone that we are not working with Luxology to develop any software, and have no relationship with any employees at Luxology. All ongoing software development is happening in-house at Newtek's San Antonio headquarters.

Option 2 Newtek is pleased to announce that we are working with Luxology to develop the next version of Lightwave. The two companies will use their combined strength to develop future versions of Lightwave 3D.

Oh, you can't fool us Elmar, we know this was all part of the master plan! Part of the same sanitized coverage of NAB that hides the true suffering of the attendees!

Can't we keep this as a looking forward to Siggraph thread and not make it the 1000th lux/nt one? Jesus.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

An alternate topic for Luxotek or Newology or whatever thread...

It is very interesting, that everyone has his or her own theory. I have my own also...

Anyway, I am intersted in only what will LW8 do for us...

Yeah, I skipped out in E3, not really good for making contacts sometimes... too many things going on. I am definately having my credit card ready for Siggraph... if they do the "Buy LW now!" deal, I will be ready.

Also, I'll have my digital camera w/me so those who didn't go can see something.

Will anyone go to E3? It`s out of my range (I`m in Hungary), but at CDV`s stand there will be 2 characters of mine. If I`m informed well, one of them will be printed in 1:1 scale...a german panzer officer...If anyone is going there, please tell me later how it looked like...

I'll ask my co-workers to look out for it and maybe get a shot of it. If you want, e-mail a small image of what it looks like...

Ahhh! Siggraph - I would **LOVE** to be there too - But I really don't have the finance for that sort of trip.

Anyway, you think Europe doesn't get enough 3D shows and conferences? Jeesh, well, try living here in New Zealand! :)

Lets see - You have 'Newtek Europe' (which I guess is a good thing?) and there's things like 3D Festival in Copenhagen, the occasional 'LW World tour' in Amsterdam, etc. There used to be something called LEAF (but I think that's now part of 3D festival?), and then there's also 'Digital Arts World' later in the year in London.

In NZ, we have... Hey, I forgot, yeh, I run a LightWave User Group once a month! :)

Hey...I would trade my Hungarian citizenship with your NZ citizenship... :)

Here there is no even a LW usergroup...No Tour...Nothing...

Here the incomes are so low, that actually no one can afford even a trip to Amsterdam (it would cost me more than one month income)

And in NZ, there is WETA, LOTR...maybe it will spin up the 3D world there...

Narf! Narf! Sounds like we're both in the same boat - Well, I know some people going to Siggraph - Sounds like it could be fun! Maybe I'll win Lotto in a few months, eh! :)

What's this - No User group in Hungary? I tell ya, You should take the initiative and start one, J3st3r! Get that Hungarian LW community up and going! :)

There was nothing in NZ either - Now there is cause I just wanted to meet people who used LW, talk LW and 3D! Over 3 years later and I'm still doing it! I'm either crazy, or I just love LW too much! ;)

Heya...I think it`s a lot easier to start a Maya community...Here the vast majority of cg artist using max or maya, and LW is treated as an ancient remainder of the dawn of public cg...
I think very few of us are LW users, and to be honest, I think I will migrate to maya also. It`s hard to find job here. What I found is mostly game developement. Most of them are using MAX. Few of them are using Maya. All the film studios are using Maya. LW is left for modelling only. That`s the sad situation...The greatest LW fan, who started a community is now the greatest Maya fan...

So, I think it`s sad

I have never used maya. Is it really that much better than LW? I hear it is somewhat slow. And if you want clothing and fur tool you have to spend a fortune. Also I hear the renderer in maya is not that good.

My friend (who is a Maya and XSI user) told me, that for modelling, and short deadline LW is the best, because it renders very fast and mental ray-like. But if you need extremely complex character animation, with lot of scripting, and expressing, and interaction between objects, maya will do the best.

So I think, it is useful to know a little maya besides LW

i hope im not learning how to be amazing in a program that will be dead by the time i get into the industry. besides the most PR thing i have scene has been done in LW. including LORT 2 with Semegoll!

Hehehe! Hey, that sounds more like an excuse then a reason to me, J3st3r! :) Well, you could ask someone else if they'll start one then - You may be surprised how much bigger the LW user base is then you expect it to be! When I started the LWUG here in NZ, I thought there were 3-4 users in the entire country - Well, now we have 60 people in our mailing list alone! :)

Remember that User groups aren't just about industry - If they were, I'd probably have joined a Maya or Max one by now as well - Its about learning, sharing, networking and socialising. And you find out that there probably really is some employment for LW users as well out there, through word of mouth! :D

BTW, a question for any previous Siggraphers... Is there any User Group events held at this thing? I'm just curious... I know there's usually some kind of Newtek event of some sorts, if I recall...

Got this same kind of confirmation about Sig from the local reseller of all things Newtek. He said he was sworn to secrecy but could at lesat say that we should be looking for some major annoucements about Lightwave by Sig.
