Okiedokey... finally finished with this (and maybe the GF is still speaking to me to).

38-odd Mb, DivX5.11 - sorry about the dodgy sound, audio's not my strong-point.

Elapsed time, 7 days including rendering. I know where there's one glaringly not-right bit, but I'm being strict with myself on time.

Enjoy, crit, spit, throw rocks... :D

<edit>

Stills... I don't know if the anim's too big for people to want to download it, I've encoded it at PAL D1 for quality's sake...

One quick thing...

I'm not trying to diminish anything that Burt Rutan or his team did with their magnificent X-Prize win by spraying everything in hypothetical Virgin livery. I'm just jazzed about the possibility that in my lifetime I'll be catching a suborbital to Sydney from Heathrow, if you see what I mean :D I might be being paranoid that someone might think I was painting over the blue star-trail down SS1's nose, but... hey.. y'know... just making sure...

Are they flying over the Arizonian desert?

Adrian.

There is no reason that you shouldn't patt yourself on the back for the well done project. Eventhough there where some little problems here and there.Good work :D

Are they flying over the Arizonian desert?

By and large, they're flying over the Mojave or the nearest approximation thereof.

The main pullout shot is using a nice high-res orbital photo of a section of the Mojave, for example.

That was fast work, Bog. you got me beat by a mile. More interesting, more colorful, and nice compositing. Good job.

Heh - your is more detailed, the proportioning of your White Knight's hull is closer to True, and your SS1 detailing kicks mine into a cocked hat - but then, it's not a competition :D I'm just thrilled to be doing this stuff, and it's great to really give myself a chance to dig into LW's gorgeous effects tools as well as it's modelling and lighting stuff.

Now if only I'd had time to put in the RCS thruster bursts before the feather... ;)

Bog, where'd you get that great desert backdrop?

Pixeltek,

Nasa's "Earth from Space" collection.

I'm assuming you mean the straight-down one that I used for the engine burn shot.. the rest of the backgrounds I got via Google, just rummaging with search keys like "Desert Aerial" and so on until I saw an image I could comp into that was in the ballpark for the effect I wanted to acheive.

Yes, that's the one. Thanks for the link, Bog.

Great work Bog!

I asked Pixeltek if he planned to do a ďwhat ifĒ concept of Burtís deisgn for Bransonís Virgin Galactic (the seven-seater ship), so I thought Iíd ask you the same.

Iíve been thinking about what would have to be done to accomplish this and have started my concpet. It would be interesting to see what the three of us or anyone else interested might come up with.

Let Pixeltek and myself know if you like to do this.

Mike

Mike and Pixeltek,

I hadn't planned to show this to *anyone* until I'd tried to get it in front of The Last Bearded Explorer himself... but having seen you guys doing such great stuff, I felt that I had to share, so you know that other people were following the dream.

With regards to the seven seater... he's ordered them from Rutan. So ... it'll be a Burt. :D I have no idea what the man will do. I've dreamed of spaceships since as long as I can remember, and SS1 was a real curveball to my imagination.

A wild guess? I'd say a spatulate nose to accomodate a wider body. Also, as a passenger bird, I'd expect multiple engines for redundancy. Whether it's a cluster of small engines mounted down the main axis, like SS1 writ large, or nacelle mounted engines with a Nitrous feed through the wings - no idea. You'd have to ask the Man With Sideburns :)

Either way... I'd love to have a speculative kick-about :D

I think it would be interesting to see what a little imagination and a bit of reference (in the way of the original SS1 ad WK) might get us. Youíre right though about trying to think through Rutan eyes (this line was directed to Pixeltek).

Having said this, Iíll pencil sketch an idea of what might be down the road from my point of view and let you guys have a look at it. Iíl then model and animate it.

Iíll give myself a very short timeline to make this interesting. Iíd be interested in seeing what you guys might conceptualize.

Mike
